Happy Easter Promenade!
The traditional Easter promenade – shown in Rehoboth Beach – began in New York City in the 1870s. There, rich people who had dressed up for church strolled along Fifth Avenue in what was called a “post-church fashion show” with outfits some say went to extremes to outdo others and show off wealth. The post-church walk idea spread but grew less snooty. Still, some original fashion traditions endured. Think hats for everybody, suits and ties for men and boys, dresses and white gloves for women and girls. This photo from the Delaware Public Archives shows just how packed Rehoboth’s Boardwalk could be in the Easter promenade heyday.
