Michigan's crayon box needed to exist and whoever designed this color palette understood this state at a level that Crayola's corporate office simply does not. Twelve colors. Zero generic names. Every single one requiring either lived Michigan experience or a map to fully understand.

Great Lakes Grey is the color Michigan uses for approximately seven months of the year across the entire sky and deserves top billing. Road Construction Orange has its own crayon now and honestly it has earned it given how much surface area it covers from April through October on every road in the state.

UP Copper Brown is doing important historical work representing a billion dollar mining industry that built the American industrial revolution from the Keweenaw Peninsula. Sleeping Bear Dunes Beige is the color that costs three thousand dollars to rescue you from if you run down it without reading the sign.

Lake Michigan Blue and Detroit Hustle Orange sitting in the same box is Michigan in one image. The natural wonder and the industrial grit. The shoreline and the factory floor. The Pure Michigan tourism commercial and the Detroit vs Everybody hoodie. Both colors belong here and neither one makes sense without the other.

Winter in Michigan White is just white but the name carries six months of emotional weight that regular white simply does not have. Sunset on the Bay Gold is Michigan ending the list the way Michigan ends every summer day, beautifully and with the specific awareness that it will not last nearly long enough.

Please use non-lead fishing and tackle

The most heartbreaking cases are the ones that could have been prevented.

The loon passed away last night 😢Rest easy sweet loon.

Thanks to Loon Rescue Incorporated for guiding Tom who reached out for help for the loon. They provide a great service to people all over the country advising how to rescue these birds and doing many rescues throughout Wisconsin as well.

May this be a wake up call that there are loons dying in the UP from lead poisoning. Let’s not let his life end without honoring him and making the switch to non-lead fishing and tackle, to prevent further loss for this threatened species.

Sporting Lead-Free has a great guide on how to make the switch hereļæ¼ā¬‡ļø
https://www.sportingleadfree.org/how-to-switch-tackle

They also have great info for making the switch to non lead ammunition as well.

Please share so we can spread this educational message.

This is a post I’ve honestly been putting off writing, but with fawn season about to begin, I feel it’s important to be transparent with our community about the reality we are facing here in the Upper Peninsula when it comes to wildlife rehab.

At this time, I am currently the ONLY licensed fawn rehabber admitting fawns in the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Because SWREC is still operating out of my home facility, I am extremely limited in the number of fawns I can safely and legally accommodate. I can only admit fawns from Marquette County, and even then, I can only take the number of fawns that my enclosure space and one licensed rehabber can properly care for.

PLEASE do not remove a fawn from the wild without contacting me first — even within Marquette County.

Many fawns that appear abandoned are actually not orphaned at all. Their mothers often leave them alone for long periods of time while they feed nearby. Every available spot I have must be reserved for fawns that are truly orphaned, or injured.

If you find a fawn outside of Marquette County, your only option is to contact the Michigan DNR, and they will handle the situation as they see fit.

I am attaching a map of Michigan so people can truly understand the critical lack of licensed wildlife rehabbers across the U.P. The need for a dedicated wildlife rehabilitation center in the Upper Peninsula has never been greater.

It is more important than ever that we find a permanent location to build the U.P.’s first Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Center.

If you or someone you know has property available that may be a good fit for this project, please email me at:
[email protected]

Thank you all for your continued support, compassion, and understanding as we work to help Michigan’s wildlife with the limited resources we currently have.

ā€œAlone doesn’t mean abandoned.ā€
Please give me a call before you decide to intervene.
