Remembering Francois La Borde: A Legacy That Lives On
Today, we pause to remember Mr. Francois La Borde, whose life and legacy remain deeply woven into the history of Starr County.
In recognition of his death anniversary, we are sharing two remarkable pieces of history: Francois La Borde’s original death certificate, alongside his 1896 marriage license to Miss Eva Marks, documenting their marriage in Starr County on March 4, 1896.
These historic documents offer a rare glimpse into the life of a man whose name would become forever connected to one of Starr County’s most treasured landmarks.
The legacy of Francois La Borde lives on not only in the pages of our history, but within the very walls of La Borde House. Every room, hallway, and architectural detail reflects his vision of creating a distinctive French inspired landmark in the heart of our community. He could hardly have imagined that, more than 120 years later, La Borde House would still stand becoming part of generations of people, families, and stories that have helped shape Starr County. From welcoming notable guests such as Lady Bird Johnson and Robert F. Kennedy to hosting countless family gatherings, celebrations, visitors, and community moments, La Borde House has become much more than a historic building. It is a living piece of our history and a reminder of the importance of preserving the places that tell the story of who we are.
Today, we remember Francois La Borde not simply as a name from the past, but as part of the rich history that makes La Borde House and Starr County so special.
More than a building, La Borde House is a living piece of our history.
May we continue to preserve, honor, and share these stories for generations to come.
