One year ago last night and bleary-eyed, I watched migrating whooping cranes glow green, bathed by the wild light of aurora borealis pouring over the Saskatchewan prairie. I never would have dreamed such a scene, nor will I ever forget it.

Right now, roughly 550 of North America’s tallest birds and the most endangered crane in the world are winging south from breeding grounds in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park. By late November, most whoopers including families with their precious chicks in tow will have arrived to their winter stronghold at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding conservation lands along the Texas Gulf Coast, completing a 2500 mile-long journey through the heart of the Great Plains.

Nearly a century ago, post Dust Bowl and with our world at war, there were less than 20 whooping cranes left on Earth. Today, this mythical bird continues to recover, despite us and because of us, proving that even in the darkest hours, when we put our heads, hands and hearts together, conservation works.

Long live cranes.

📣 Visitor Center Hours Update!

Good news! Starting today, the Visitor Center will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week.

Come browse exhibits, chat with staff/volunteers, pick up maps, and learn more about the incredible wildlife that calls the refuge home.

🌅 All refuge trails and observation platforms remain open every day from sunrise to sunset.

Visiting outside Visitor Center hours? No problem! Just be sure to register and pay your fee at the self-service kiosk outside the Visitor Center before heading out to explore.
