The Big Tree

Located in Lamar, a small community near Rockport, the Big Tree is a breathtaking symbol of strength on the Texas coast. Standing 44' tall and having a circumference of 35', this tree is one of the largest in the entire United States.

Estimated to be anywhere between 1,000-2,000 years old, the Big Tree is potentially the oldest live oak tree in the world. Her history is long and storied. The Karankawa tribe is said to have held council beneath her canopy. Her jaw-dropping size also led her to become a landmark and meeting spot for other tribes, pirates, and explorers. Local legend says Cabeza da Vaca and La Salle both used the oak as a landmark while exploring the South Texas coast.

Historians believe the Big Tree has withstood between 40-50 major hurricanes during her life. As well as countless floods, droughts, and fires. During the historic 2011 drought, the Big Tree had to be doused in thousands of gallons of water. During the Civil War, the town of Lamar was destroyed. Only very few things remined, the Big Tree being one of them.

Her strength is something locals and visitors alike have marveled at for centuries. If you find yourself in the Rockport area, stop by and take in the incredible bay breeze beneath her stretching canopy.
