Why have a Business Plan?

There are several reasons why a business plan has value. 1. It's a document used by lenders to help them determine the feasibility of financing an endeavor. 2. It provides guidance or a road map if you will, for what, when, why and how you're going to do something. 3. It provides confidence that the owners know what they're doing.

We have seen all varieties of what people think passes as a business plan. These documents should be professionally prepared, demonstrating again that the owners know what they're doing. First, the 1-2 page Executive Summary is arguably the most important part of the Business Plan. The reason being is that the summary, in most cases determines whether an individual reads further, often determining the fate of your possible funding. Also, if the summary is not well written, it demonstrates YOUR professionalism or lack thereof.

In summary, if you're starting a business, invest in a professionally prepared business plan. Figure it as part of your start up expense.
