This year’s Halloween porch display required some rustic lanterns so I whipped up these adorable wooden Jack O’Lanterns.
These are made with 1X6 cedar fence boards because we didn’t have any 1X stock in the leftover wood pile and fence boards are cheap.
You could use anything as long as it’s an inch thick…recycled pallets, etc…the rattier, the better from my point of view!
If you want a larger lantern, you could use a 1X8 or even two 1X4s placed side by side. The sky’s the limit. Instructions on the pics!

Garden season is instantly over and…hello Halloween! I’m in the middle of a project that I will show you in a couple of days. In the meantime, here’s a peak at Terraluna, dressed for the holiday!

Tomato harvest is on! This is the third big picking with one more to go. Are we sick of tomatoes yet? No, never! These are Celebrities. Blessedly, they are semi-determinate. I hope everyone is getting their fill of delicious home grown or farmers’ market produce!

It’s tomato season. We are swimming in tomatoes. They hang heavy on the plants, overflow the colanders and crowd the kitchen counters. Oh, how I wish I could save some of these days laden with abundant produce for a cold winter afternoon… Failing that, I often decide to devote an afternoon to canning salsa. Homemade salsa is a treat at our house and never lasts long. No recipe; just throw in what moves you and make it as hot or mild as you like!

I plant parsley from seed in the late fall. It winters over and gives us lush bunches of fresh greens in the spring. When the summer heat hits, parsley, like most other annual herbs, will flower and go to seed. I love this part of the cycle and use the beautiful umbels to garnish breakfast plates. By far my favorite thing about growing parsley is watching the variety of teensy pollinators swarm the flowers. Sooo sweet!

Summer Solstice and the pollinators are out in force! Flowering herbs attract pollinators more effectively than any other flower. Some gardeners regularly plant two stands of basil, one in the kitchen garden and one next to the tomatoes. The one in the kitchen garden is snipped regularly, but the one by the tomatoes is left to flower, attracting hordes of bees to pollinate the tomatoes.
This is borage. It volunteered in the garden a few years ago and I let it remain. The bees love its blue cucumber flavored flowers and I use them to garnish drinks and desserts.

Early June in the garden…today I planted the last of the summer seeds. I still have work to do in the greenhouse, of course, and in a few months, I’ll be sewing perennials for next spring and scattering poppy seeds for their winter chill. Even so, finishing the last of this year’s planting before the summer solstice really does feel like a celebration of sorts. Enjoy our beautiful early June garden. You will have to imagine the chorus of birdsong!
