The River House Lodge is Rowlesburg's first hotel since the famous Howard Hotel closed in the 1980s. This little railroad town has always had hotels, beginning with the original River House, an early tavern and hotel serving the needs of a growing town in the 1850s. The railroad brought prosperity to Rowlesburg, designed the town and named it. Rowles was a surveyor with the railroad and layed out
the plots and streets for the town. Now, we have become a tourist town with 6 festivals from early May to Christmas. For sometime there has been a need for a hotel. Now, we have one and I am proud to be able to open this year! Plans call for an additional 4-5 rooms on the 3rd floor. Now we offer 3 rooms with two of the rooms being joined for a suite. The hotel offers a lovely room for sitting and relaxing, one of the favorite pastimes in the mountains. There is a dinning room with Servant's Table from New England, Windsor Highback chairs and other antiques. The house is a step back into an era of great wealth and prosperity in Rowlesburg and all of the other little railroad towns. The house was built by a merchant and banking family and reflects that. The woodwork is Chestnut and has all been found and restored. Everything has been designed to turn back the pages of time and give our guests a feel for what life was like then. The town now offers a major arts festival in May, WWII Historical reenactment in June, two championship bicycle races in June and July, an old fashioned Ox Roast on Labor Day along with the Northern West Virginia Train Show. In October we celebrate with the Chestnut Festival and in December an old fashioned German Christ Kindl Mart. All throughout the summer the Szilagyi Center for Performing Arts is a busy place with its world class exhibit of WWII. This museum would be headlines in the Washington Post were it to open at the Smithsonian. In addition, the Center houses the Centenary Model Bridges that were hand crafted for the 1927 Fair of the Iron Horse in Baltimore. Many of the bridges reflect designs used throughout the long history of railroading in Rowlesburg. In additon to the above, Cheat River is one of the premier white water venues on the east coast. With undamned water reaching Class V, the paddler can choose a leisurely canoe trip or a thrilling raft ride. Cheat River has become one of the cleanest rivers in the Appalachians. Game fish are returning and are being stocked on a regular basis. Eagles are now nesting in the valley for the first time in a century. The Allegheny Trail, part of the Appalachian Trail, cuts right though Rowlesburg. The visitor will never get bored. Nearby is the Mononghela National Forest, Blackwater Falls and Deep Creek Lake. These places add still more to the selection of things to do. Come and enjoy. Stay with us at the River House Lodge
