The above photo was taken in 1971, and we thought we would take this time to share a bit of information about the history of our cozy hotel! The Sitzmark Chalet is in its sixty-seventh year and going as strong as ever, thanks to its loyal guests and committed owners and staff. The inn's history began in 1959 when the Wheatleys of Amarillo, Texas followed their dream by building the 'Turf Motel' filled with plush and ultra-modern furnishings: pinks and beige colors of the time period with every room containing a handsome upright radio cabinet. The motel consisted of a manager's living quarters and guest rooms 10 - 14 which, with many updates, are still in use today. In 1963 the motel name was changed to the 'Sitzmark Chalet' while an additional wing was added bringing the number of guest rooms up to the current 17. At that time the space above the office was a ski shop providing the latest European fashions to Ruidoso! Throughout the years there have been ownership changes, but the name has remained the Sitzmark Chalet. Many improvements have been made to the property, including closing in the walkways to turn the motel into a hotel, building beautiful pine headboards for every guest room and adding a unique whiskey barrel sauna in the courtyard. In the past and present, the Sitzmark Chalet has been a honeymooners' getaway. In February 2018 the inn was visited by a couple who stayed in room 10 - the same room where they spent their honeymoon 50 years earlier! Guests have returned to stay at the Sitzmark year after year. At the Sitzmark Chalet Inn, we treat our guests as family and strive for excellence in every way. We look forward to welcoming you to our unique hotel and hope to see you soon!
