Did you know? That fishy smell near an outlet has nothing to do with your kitchen.
If you've ever caught a whiff of something like burning plastic or fish — near an outlet, a light switch, or your electrical panel — and dismissed it as "something in the trash," this post is for you.
That smell is overheating plastic insulation. It means something inside that wall is running hotter than it should be. It could be a loose wire connection, an overloaded circuit, or in a lot of older Twin Cities homes, aluminum wiring that's started to arc.
The tricky part? It doesn't smell like fire. So most people assume it's something else entirely and move on.
Here's what to do instead:
→ Don't ignore it, even if it comes and goes
→ Feel the outlet or switch cover — warm to the touch when nothing's plugged in is a red flag
→ If it's strong, persistent, or near your panel, call an electrician same day
It's one of the most underrated warning signs in a home — and one of the easiest to catch early.
