A walk along the shore as the tide comes in can be a great time to look for shorebirds and ocean treasures washing in on the waves. Did you know? The ocean tends to get rougher during the winter, and the scouring waves and king tides during this time of year shape the topography of the beach. You may see where the tides carve away some sections of the beach and build up other areas. The wave action redistributing nutrients along the beach makes the beach system dynamic and productive for many species of wildlife and plants.

The seasonal cycles of plants, wildlife, weather, and the ocean offer daily opportunities to notice something new and appreciate the wonders of the natural world. On Little St. Simons Island, you’ll always be rewarded with a wildlife sighting or cool nature find if you slow down to enjoy the world around you. Island guests can join the LSSI Naturalists on a natural history adventure to enjoy a ramble through diverse coastal habitats. See what you can find!
Species spotlight: the waterspider bog orchid (Habenaria repens) can be found in the remote freshwater wetlands on LSSI. For much of the year, the low-growing green leaves could be easily overlooked. However, the tall stalk of blooms that emerges once per year surely makes an impression. We’ve found that fall is the best time to spot the unusual, spindly flowers on these unique plants.

Longer nights and cooler weather make for the best stargazing! 🌠 The dark sky around Little St. Simons Island makes it easy to spot meteor showers and satellites. During evening programs, Island staff can set up spotting scopes to help you view the moon, planets, and constellations. Sometimes we even catch sight of the International Space Station passing overhead!
Have you stargazed on LSSI? 🌟

“Muhly grass, also known as sweetgrass, is spectacular on Little St. Simons in the fall—even more so when its soft pink panicles catch the early morning light. Here it has colonized the low dunes and swales on the north end of the island along with dollar w**d, broomsedge, sea oats, and wax myrtles.”
– Philip Juras: Sweet Muhly Sunrise.

What do fall colors look like on the Georgia coast? We don’t see a big leaf change, but flowers put on quite a show! Maritime grasslands burst with goldenrod and muhly grass blooms throughout September and October, heralding the end of summer. Around this time, we also see a great influx in migratory birds and butterflies, adding to the riots of color across the Island. While blooming seasons and migratory stopovers can be fleeting, we make the most of every opportunity to appreciate the nature on Little St. Simons Island!

Our owner, Hank Paulson, recently shared a report jointly undertaken by his institute, TNC, and the WWF – https://www.paulsoninstitute.org/conservation/financing-nature-2026/ He shared two things that especially resonated with us here on the island. The first: visitors to LSSI “…discover something increasingly rare in modern life: the opportunity to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the natural world.” And second: Nature “…is a source of beauty, inspiration, innovation, indeed, of much that is good about life.” We completely agree, and are so grateful to Hank & Wendy for preserving LSSI for generations to come, and their continuing work in conservation, both here on the island and in the wider world.

Sea turtle nesting season is nearly over. While we are going to miss finding new crawls and counting hatchlings, we are pleased that another summer of successful turtle nesting is complete. Staff, researchers, and volunteers have documented every turtle crawl and nest on LSSI for over 30 years! All of the information we gather is shared with Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources to help advance sea turtle conservation across the state and beyond. Here’s a recap of the 2026 nesting season on Little St. Simons Island:
First nest: May 7th
Total nests: 209
Total eggs laid: 24,055 (estimated)
Hatchlings: 16,000 and counting! 5 nests are still incubating.
We want to say a big “thank you!” to the DNR staff, LSSI staff, and volunteers who contributed to this year’s sea turtle conservation. 🐢 All of our sea turtle work is completed by trained individuals with the necessary permits. We share our data with Georgia DNR to advance the conservation of sea turtles in our region.
