In San Francisco, the sun saves its best for October.

With parks across the city, and most residents living within half a mile of one, a green escape is never far. One of our favorite places to unfold a blanket is Alamo Square, where the Painted Ladies line the hill in quiet color. It’s especially lovely this time of year, when the days slow down and the only plan is good company.

Our Les Clefs d’Or concierge team would be delighted to share their top city recommendations to help you curate your perfect afternoon.

Beyond the world-famous views, San Francisco holds a past rich with hidden history.

Originally named La Isla de los Alcatraces (Island of Pelicans) in 1775, it housed the Pacific Coast’s oldest operating lighthouse long before becoming a federal prison. Today, its silhouette sits quietly in the bay fog.

Built in the late 1800s, this iconic row along Alamo Square survived the 1906 quake intact. Surprisingly, the phrase “Painted Ladies” wasn’t coined until the 1970s, celebrating the vintage detail set against our modern skyline.

The clock tower famously survived the 1906 earthquake, stopping right at 5:16 AM. Long before the bridges were built, this terminal was actually the second busiest transit hub in the world—now home to our favorite local artisan market.

What started as a native salt marsh became the West Coast’s first military air station in 1921. Today, after a community restoration that brought back 22 acres of tidal wetlands, it’s our go-to spot for coastal walks with Golden Gate views.

Market Street was once the city’s bustling printing and publishing hub. Inspired by that rich literary heritage, MKT Restaurant & Bar pairs coastal California cuisine with panoramic views of the historic street below.

For 65 years, Four Seasons has brought people closer to places and to one another. To mark this anniversary, we partnered with Yerba Buena Partnership for a private celebration of international artist Saype’s Beyond Walls installation.

Painted onto the grass of Yerba Buena Gardens with biodegradable pigments, the monumental fresco of intertwined hands marked SAYPE’s West Coast debut. Nearly 1,000 people gathered to form a human chain around the artwork, becoming part of his global project celebrating human connection.

“San Francisco has always been a beacon of freedom, of social movements, of new ideas,” said SAYPE.

Following the public celebration, we welcomed SAYPE and his team, civic and cultural leaders, community partners, and select media to our Presidential Suite for Ch*****ne and oysters with a view of the artwork.

“SAYPE’s work reminds us that meaningful connections happen when people come together around a shared experience,” said Stéphane Gras, our General Manager.

Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating art, community and 65 years of hospitality.

Come join us at Yerba Buena Gardens this afternoon to see SAYPE’s Beyond Walls.

Over the past few days, French-Swiss artist SAYPE has been painting monumental interlocking hands and arms directly onto the grass with his signature biodegradable paint.

Beyond Walls is a global art project centered on connection and unity. From Venice and Istanbul to Cairo and Rio de Janeiro, SAYPE’s works have brought people together through a symbolic human chain around the world. We feel fortunate to see this project take shape here in San Francisco, right in our neighborhood.

As we celebrate 65 years of Four Seasons, the message behind Beyond Walls feels especially meaningful. For us, hospitality has always been about connection: between people, cultures and the places we call home.

Join our community at Yerba Buena Gardens this afternoon at 4:30 PM for a free public gathering and human chain around the artwork. We will see you there.

Some of the most meaningful connections begin right outside our doors.

From Paris to Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro to the Great Pyramids of Giza, French-Swiss artist SAYPE’s Beyond Walls has connected people and places through monumental paintings of interlocking hands and arms. Together, they form a symbolic human chain around the world.

This week, that chain reaches San Francisco. Our hotel overlooks Yerba Buena Gardens, where its newest link is taking shape across the grass.
As Four Seasons celebrates 65 years of bringing people together across borders and cultures, we’re proud to welcome SAYPE and his team to Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco.

Stop by to watch SAYPE at work, then help turn a painted gesture into a living one. Join our community at Yerba Buena Gardens for a free public gathering and human chain on October 7 at 4:30 pm.

Be part of San Francisco’s art history.
