One of the best ways to see the lake is from the middle of it.

September cruises aboard the M/S Mount Washington give you a chance to enjoy the lake before the season changes, with stops and departures around the Lakes Region depending on the cruise schedule.

If you've spent most of the summer looking at Winnipesaukee from the shore, consider this your excuse to change the view before boating season winds down.

We talk about Lake Winnipesaukee all the time, but it's only part of the Lakes Region story.

The area is home to several major lakes, including Winnisquam, Squam, Newfound, Waukewan and, of course, Winnipesaukee, along with many smaller lakes and ponds scattered throughout central New Hampshire.

Each area feels a little different, too. Lake Winnisquam sits just below Steele Hill and offers a quieter side of lake life, while Winnipesaukee stretches through communities like Laconia, Meredith and Center Harbor. Head farther west and you'll find Newfound Lake, while Squam is known for its beautiful, largely undeveloped shoreline.

It's easy to spend years visiting this part of New Hampshire and still find somewhere you haven't explored.

That's one of the things we love about calling the Lakes Region home.

Still deciding what to do for Labor Day weekend?

You don't need an elaborate itinerary to make the most of a long weekend in the Lakes Region.

🌊 Get on the water. Go boating, kayaking or paddleboarding while summer is still holding on.

🥾 Hit the trails. Head out early for a hike before settling in somewhere for a relaxing afternoon.

🚢 See Winnipesaukee from the water. A scenic cruise is a completely different way to experience the lake.

🍽️ Find a patio. Take advantage of outdoor dining while those warm evenings are still here.

🏊 Have a resort day. Sometimes a pool, hot tub and nowhere else to be is all the itinerary you need.

🍦 Make one more ice cream stop. This one requires no explanation.

Whatever you choose, leave a little room in the schedule for doing absolutely nothing. It is a holiday weekend, after all.

Can we let you in on a Lakes Region secret?

You don't have to visit in July to have a great summer getaway.

Early September can bring warm afternoons, plenty of opportunities to get outside and a slightly slower pace as the busiest weeks of summer wind down. You can still spend the day by the lake or pool, but you might find a little more breathing room while you're doing it.
