The estate was once the home of noted poet, playwright and essayist Witter Bynner. Bynner and his companion Robert Hunt were famous

- or infamous - for the wild parties they hosted in the house know as “Bynner's bashes.” The celebrity guest list included D. Lawrence, Ansel Adams, Igor Stravinsky, Martha Graham, Willa Cather, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stephen Spender, Christopher Isherwood, Georgia O'Keeffe, Mary Austin, Thornton Wilder, Robert Oppenheimer, Robert Frost, W. Auden, Lynn Riggs, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn and countless others. Constructed in a Spanish-Pueblo Revival Style, the historic adobe estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is consider one of Santa Fe's most significant structures.

🎨 A remarkable piece of our history is on view in Santa Fe.

Before the Inn of the Turquoise Bear became the home of poet Witter Bynner, these adobe walls were home to another important figure in Santa Fe’s artistic story: Paul Burlin.

Burlin first came to New Mexico in 1910, and the experience would profoundly shape his work. He went on to become an early figure in American Modernism, bringing together the bold new artistic ideas of his time with the landscapes and influences he encountered in the Southwest.

Paul and his wife, ethnomusicologist Natalie Curtis Burlin, made their home here before Paul sold the property to Witter Bynner in 1921—beginning the next extraordinary chapter in the history of the home that would one day become the Inn of the Turquoise Bear.

More than a century later, Burlin’s story has returned to the spotlight in Santa Fe.

The New Mexico Museum of Art is currently presenting “Paul Burlin: An American Modernist in the Southwest,” an exhibition that reintroduces Burlin as a foundational, yet long-overlooked figure in American Modernism and explores the profound role New Mexico played in the development of his art.

For us, seeing his work celebrated just a short distance from the home he once knew makes this exhibition feel especially meaningful.

Paul Burlin isn’t simply part of Santa Fe’s art history.
He is part of our history, too. ❤️

Around here, some of our favorite guests happen to have four legs. ❤️
