The renowned Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will soon be presenting "Beautiful Decay", the company's first full-length ballet, choreographed by longtime collaborator Nicolo Fonte (this is his tenth piece performed by ASFB).

The ballet addresses a unique theme in the dance world, that of aging in this culture that fully reveres the beauty of youth. The two-act piece explores of the cycle of life, the inevitability of aging, and the effects of aging on both a physical and psychological level. This emotional piece utilizes not just young dancers, but also two septuagenarian dancers.

Says Fonte, “There is something beautiful in experiencing 40 years of experience onstage, where physical prowess morphs into something else and becomes much more of an emotional, reflective way of moving.”

I highly recommend seeing this performance, which will take place at the glorious Lensic Theatre on August 31 at 8pm. Tickets may be purchased online, and range in price: $36, $54, $74, $94

Epic Hiking in Santa Fe
Santa Fe has a wide array of incredible hiking trails: we are happy to help you figure out the best trail(s) for your needs and desires, depending on the level of athleticism you are seeking and the weather conditions at that particular time of year.

Madeleine, Brady and I just hiked the Big Tesuque, through fields of abundant wildflowers, with billowing white clouds overhead. What a glorious hike this was! The Big Tesuque Trail is just under 3 miles in length, and while there are a few somewhat steep areas, most of it is quite moderate and accessible for all hiking abilities. The trail intersects with the Aspen Vista Trail, which is actually the road utilized by the ski area service vehicles, so is very wide and has a mild ascent. You can certainly switch over to this trail if you are feeling the effects of the high altitude, or simply turn to the right on Aspen Vista, go another 20 feet, and then take the trail on the left to continue with the Big Tesuque. Either way offers incredible views, along with good tree coverage from ponderosa pines and aspen trees.

Remember when hiking in the Santa Fe area that we are above 7000 feet, so elevation can be a kicker. Bring plenty of water, along with a hat and sunscreen.

It's time to get your tickets for the upcoming season of the renowned Santa Fe Opera. As always, there is a mix of well known and lesser known classics (this year La Boheme, The Pearl Fishers and Cosi Fan Tutte), along with a couple of newer productions (Jenufa and The Thirteenth Child).

The magnificent stage, with a backdrop of the stunning Jemez Mountains, reminds you that while you are hearing Metropolitan Opera quality voices, you are definitely not in New York City!

The Santa Fe Opera offers shuttle service from La Posada (reservations needed 24 hours in advance), just one block from the inn, or you can drive your own vehicle. I recommend getting there early so you can do a tailgate picnic and take in one of our glorious sunsets before the performance. The opera does offer tailgate picnics ($19 or $28 each) or more formal Preview Dinners (for $70), should you wish to avoid any pre-opera food shopping. Another fun pre-opera activity is to attend the Prelude Talks, free and informative discussions on the opera of the evening that are offered free of charge to all interested parties.

The 2019 opera season opens on June 28 with La Boheme: this is always a gala affair, with most attendees dressed in their finest.
The season closes on July 24, also with La Boheme. Tickets may be purchased online at the opera website.

Santa Fe has an abundance of lilacs, and if you are fortunate enough to be here at just the right time, you will be transported by the heavenly aroma of lilacs throughout the city. Judging by this photo, taken on April 26, the lilacs should be in full bloom within a week. Make your plans now to visit Santa Fe during the first two weeks of May so you too can be enveloped in their spectacular fragrance.

Not a skier? Just a five minute drive from the inn you will find plenty of early spring hiking available. We recently hiked the trail just behind St. John's College and saw only five other people during the entire two hours! Such tranquility in nature!

We woke up to 12" of fresh snow on Saturday morning - quite the surprise snowfall! After a day of sunshine and blue skies the roads and sidewalks are clear, but there is still plenty of snow to enjoy on buildings and landscapes. An ideal to come for a sunny but snowy winter getaway, or to take advantage of record snowfall at Ski Santa Fe, which got 2 feet of snow in the storm!
