This photo is labeled "Jim at the Corner House". It's dated August, 1964, long before the ripples of the 1969 Stonewall riot were felt in West Michigan. The Corner House was known as a safe and welcoming place to stay for members of the LGBTQ community who visited Saugatuck. The Corner House was also known for its beautiful gardens, a welcome retreat after a day at the beach.
The Corner House is now Hidden Garden Cottages & Suites. Lots has changed in the 62 years since Jim and a friend smiled for a summer snapshot but so much has remained the same. A safe and welcoming place to stay, a shaded garden to enjoy a drink, a respite from a crazy, scary world. Happy Pride.
