Brrrrr its a frosty morning out there! One of our families had not yet put their scraper back in their car. I went and grabbed the long-handled one I keep in my trunk for them to borrow. I may pick up some extras as I see them on sale to keep by the back door.

Are you ready for trick-or-treat night? We are! Beth is once again going to hand out candy and treats at the House of Hope. Last year she was a giant inflatable heart, you will have to let me know what she does this year.

I made sure there was plenty of candy and added some new non-food treats. That way those that have issues with candy have an alternative. We have been doing that since I found out about the teal pumpkin project. Every kid that wants to have fun trick-or-treating should be able to safely do so!

I enjoy decorating for the Holidays and Halloween is one of my favorites. I had some lights so I added them out front with our other lawn decorations. It makes me smile and I hope it makes others smile too.

Please join us in celebrating Lucia (Luci) Bush, LCSW, the most recent recipient of the Mission, Vision, Values (MVV) in ACTION Award at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center! Lucia serves as Manager of Social Work for the Residential Care Facility at the hospital.

Nominations for the MVV Award are made by employees for their caregiver colleagues. Lucia’s nomination read, in part:

“Luci goes above and beyond her responsibilities every day. Her acts of kindness, both large and small, have a meaningful impact on the lives of our residents. She understands that sometimes comfort comes in simple gestures, whether it is taking a moment out of her busy day to bring a resident a bag of popcorn, sitting quietly with someone who needs companionship, or holding a resident's hand during a difficult time. These actions reflect her deep commitment to providing not only support, but also dignity, comfort, and human connection.”

Lucia shared this statement about the award: “I hope it will help other social workers feel appreciated, as I never stand alone in what I do.”

Thank you for your compassion and meaningful work, Lucia!

🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷

"Turning 40 has made me think about all the moments I still want to be here for. As a mother of two, that's a lot of future memories to make. Life is busy, and it's easy to delay appointments when you're focused on caring for everyone else. But our health deserves a place on the priority list, too. Early detection through mammography can save lives, and I encourage every woman my age to take that important step for herself and for the people who love her." - Maria

Maria's story is a reminder that prioritizing your health today can help protect the moments that matter most tomorrow. 💓

If you're 40 or older, don't put off your mammogram. Early detection can make a meaningful difference.

Schedule your mammogram online at Guthrie.org/Mammogram or call 866-GUTHRIE (866-488-4743).

We recently had more cards dropped off from the students of Epiphany for our families which was a good thing as I was running low. One of our families loved getting them so much, they drew their own thank you card for the students. We really appreciate the kids creating these wonderful cards for the families. They always make them smile and lift their spirits. Thank you Epiphany!

Our families have kept us very busy this summer! I have not had as much time and energy to devote to the garden. What I have appreciated is that the sunflowers have not really needed much attention at all. I love the variety in coloration that we have managed to grow over the years. I also love the way they feed the butterflies and bees. Pollinators are important to anyone that tends a garden.

I have been starting to trim the heads along the walkway, so they do not lean to much over it. I leave the heads in the garden so the seeds can bring us more flowers next year. They also do a wonderful job of feeding the birds I saw some cardinals helping themselves earlier. Goldfinches are common too.

Sunflowers I have always thought of as being happy flowers. I decided to try growing a new variety this year, how do you like it? The others are volunteers that have grown from seed left behind from last year. I believe we are past ten generations of those sunflowers in our gardens. Sunflowers are also wonderful for pollinaters. I often see butterflies on them as well as bees. The bees sometimes use them as a place to sleep at night!

One of our dwarf apple trees is dropping its early season apples. Beth and I took time to collect them for our families. We even had one industrial guest decide to make a very yummy pie! I had an apple accessory of my own that I lent them to help ease the process. Little things go a long way to helping the House feel like a home.
