Full moon walk with the coyotes ✨🌕. I love to go out beyond the tree line in the dark, to where I find their tracks. I like to see it as they do, moving along the border of the woods, peering through the trees to the warm lights of my cabin. It’s a magical feeling, but I’m thankful for the log walls & cozy fire when I get back inside ☺️

You can hear their wild howls in the video. They’re always out there. I’ve had nights where their calls were echoed by the bard owls & the loons down on Seal Cove pond. That’s why we called this place the Howling Woods. :).

Just realizing I never post anything but stories anymore. Gonna try to change that.

I’m 42 today! Just back from a grand adventure with my girls. Though New Mexico’s desert magic is still on my mind, it’s nice to find such peace & contentment on the porch of my cabin in Maine. I know a westward chapter lays somewhere ahead of me, but for now I’m happy thinking of all the home projects I’m about to begin or rekindle. I’ve always loved an April birthday. As a homesteader, it feels like the start of a New Year. All the spring cleaning, inside & out, feels like it’s clearing the way for new buds & sprouts. Last year I dug ditches & wells & lay the groundwork for water & electric. This year I’ve got a home addition & many little details to tie together, but I’m getting close to the work that feels like play. Ahead of me is a mushroom home & a pyramid & a tree house & all the little touches that bring out the magic of these woods for my girls✨ It’s such a joy to walk towards a bend in the road. Happy Spring to you all 🌱☺️

I’m 41 today & it’s a good day to let go of a difficult year. Winter & divorce can leave you trudging through a storm of reflection & regret. But this morning, sitting on the porch with my coffee, I feel the sun on my skin & hear a woods that teems with life. Squirrels chase & chatter, birds sing & knock at trees. There’s a forward looking energy. Expressions of excitement & action. It’s time to take the first step on a new path, to breath in the cool sweet air & simply feel a love for life.

I’m so lucky to have my girls, my family & friends & this magical world around me. I have so many wild plans for the future… a giant mushroom house, a mirrored pyramid, woodland feasts & concerts & workshops & gardens & sculptures, fantasy novels & an epic haunted woods. It all starts with a step.

A little band practice on this snow day in the cabin☺️. It’s fun to watch Penny connect with the same songs I did as a kid. I play her all kinds of music, but the 2 she loves right now are Fast Car & I Think We’re Alone Now. My two favorites when I was young. They both are about escaping with someone you love. It doesn’t matter from what or why. Whether they’re driving fast or running into the woods, in these moments of escape the characters feel free & in love & like any dream is possible. Its funny how we’re such romantics even at 3 years old ✨

These snowy January days remind me of my first winter in the Coyotes Den. With no money and no time before the first snows we built this home from bent maple poles and scrap lumber. I remember coming home in a blizzard with snow piled so high on the roof it looked like a little igloo. It’s those nights with the crackling fire and the flickering candle light on the close walls, that it truly felt like a den, or borrow beneath the roots of a tree. Like the home of a mole in Mossflower woods. As the storm raged outside, I was warm and cozy within, reading in the low light, until I drifted off to asleep. Then I’d wake with icy breath on a cold morning before I knew the rhythms of the stove. Frosty tendrils would creep in from the doors and windows. My water glass frozen and cracked. That first flickering flame within the stove was everything, the return of life. The steam from the kettle and the hot cup of coffee in my hands, would rouse me and I’d layer sweaters, my coat and gloves and hat. I’d heave against the door, pushing out against the great snow drifts. I’d look up to the sky, an icy blue in the stillness after the storm. Then I’d set out under the heavy bows of the evergreens, the lone human footprints in a white wintry world. Looking back at my tiny den beneath the towering spruce, I’d smile at how small it really was, this home that kept me safe & happy. Whether you find it in a person or a home or within yourself, a small space of warmth & shelter against the storm, is all we really need. :)

We’ve got a porch! Or part of one, first of three:) but plenty for the grill and a few chairs and that’s what we need this summer!

It’s a slower process going from the tree to the finished board on our own, but it’s really satisfying. Like when you cook a dinner with everything grown, raised or foraged from your land.

Our first project with our home milled boards! We’re wrapping a porch around the three sunny sides our hexagon home. We’re such outside people, it’s time we had that transition space. A space for hammocks, a grill, a pool for the girls & a hang out place for the dogs! ☀️😎

We’re milling all our own lumber for our cabin projects this year! Just tested out our Alaskan saw mill for the first time. We’ll cut the boards on Candace’s dads saw mill & plane them ourselves. We’ll make all the beams for the Timberframe addition with the the Alaskan mill. Lumber is just too expensive to buy right now & we have a lot of projects on the Cabin. We’re building a porch & two additions & finishing the frame for the giant glass dome that will go on the cupola.

4 years ago we finished the cabin well enough to move in. Since that time we’ve had so many other projects on the land that we’ve barely improved our home. But this is the year of the cabin & as we have all along we’re building it with all our own trees!

A little bit of sign work before the start of our summer season!

They are done free hand (painted) on scrap wood. I was going for a rustic, trailhead look!

If there’s interest in custom, hand painted signs we may be adding them to order on our Etsy page!
