How many of you have visited Solomon’s Castle? If you haven’t, be sure to check it out on your next visit to Harder Hall-less than 2 hours away!
A three-story silver castle rises from the cattle pastures and orange groves of rural Hardee County, and its walls are built from discarded newspaper printing plates. Solomon's Castle in Ona, Florida is the handmade home, workshop and gallery of artist Howard Solomon, who began building it in the early 1970s from found and reclaimed materials. Inside, more than 80 handmade stained glass windows throw color across the rooms, with subjects that range from nursery rhymes to the planets of the solar system.
More than 300 sculptures fill the galleries, assembled from oil drums, rebar, bicycle chains, tin cans, coat hangers and car parts. Solomon, a self-taught artist from Rochester, New York, called himself the DaVinci of debris and the Rembrandt of reclamation. Outside, a 65 foot replica Spanish galleon sits in the moat and serves lunch built on family recipes. Nature trails wind through the surrounding property. Solomon lived here until his death in 2016, and his family still runs the place. Have you visited Solomon's Castle?
