We have guests often come & just porch sit after dark. Cool evenings. Peace after a day in Vacationland. Rock a bit while listening to the whippoorwills converse in the woods behind the farmhouse.
Hear the owls- even had a guy call out to the owl and there was an actual conversation happening.
The frogs in the pond croak and you can listen to multiple types of frogs.

There’s also the quiet blink and glow coming up from the grass. Some folks don’t experience this where they live.
With the hype in the National Park those kinda folks think the blinking bug butts are only found there. Like there’s a big bug net keeping them only in the Park boundaries- ummmm not!

Lightnin bugs to us country folks.
Fireflies to suburbanites and city slickers. They come with the warm spring weather and their butts actually blink- yep.
We caught them in our yard after dark as kids in Georgia. Put em in a glass jar with grass we pulled out of the yard.
We put the jar in our bedroom and had our own organic/natural nightlight. Even with holes punched in the jar lid (yes we used ice picks & knives unsupervised with no help) many lightnin bugs didn’t last until the next day.
Simple country kid life!
We never knew or cared about the lifecycle of these amazing critters.

Here’s some interesting facts. Give it a thought next time you see God’s electric bug show in your yard if you’re lucky enough to live or visit the South in the warm weather.
