Spooky Monster Lore of New Mexico. Since the 1800s, a creature with vast, leathery wings and a long, cruel head has been reported around southern New Mexico. It's the kind of thing that should have died out with the dinosaurs.
It hunts the cliffs. In 2007, a man near Las Cruces watched two of the monster birds drop from the Organ Mountains, wings spread as wide as a small plane, before they disappeared into the dusk.
Some believe there’s a portal near Lordsburg, a thin place in the desert, and that on certain nights something slips through. Lordsburg is less than an hour from Silver City.
Skeptics say it’s only a condor, that people misjudge size in the dark. Or it's trick of the light, or even something only a madman can see. But the skeptics weren’t out on Highway 90 when the headlights caught a shadow far too large to be an ordinary bird.
This October 31, the doors of the Murray will be open late as we celebrate Halloween. Come as your favorite monster. Just don’t stay outside too long. Whatever is circling outside in the dark... can wait.
