Tonight, we're happy to open our doors to the Gila Native Plant Society for their Meet & Greet. 🌵

Thanks to GNPS for the work they do keeping Silver City's native flora thriving — from the Silva Creek Botanical Garden to their community programs, it's a group worth knowing. Glad the Murray could host.

Check out their website if you want to know more! https://gilanps.org/

Throwback: Rooms at the Murray Hotel once started at just $2.50 a night! 🪙

The Murray opened its doors in 1938, right as the country was climbing out of the Great Depression. Investing in a brand-new, five-story hotel during those hard economic years was a bold bet on Silver City's future — and it paid off, quickly becoming the heart of the community.

W.D. Murray in Central (AKA Santa Clara)

After a stint as a military telegraph operator at Fort Bayard and a few years as a clerk at the Government Trading Post, young Billy Murray's path shifted in 1893 when the government discontinued commissioning post traders. At just 23 years old, he opened a store in Central for his former employer, Harry A. Booth, and became Booth's partner a year later. By 1897, at 27, Murray was sole owner, running the growing business alongside his brother, James T. Murray.

That store — the Murray General Merchandise Store — became a lifeline for Fort Bayard and the Central Mining District. Even as Murray's business empire expanded to banking, telephone service, power, water, ranching, and eventually the hotel that would bear his name, he never let go of that first storefront. Long after building the Murray Hotel, he was still there — owner and manager of one of the oldest continuously operated stores in New Mexico.

Unfortunately, I don't have any images of Murray General Merchandise Store, but would love it if anyone does! Please upload your images.

On May 30, 1870, a handful of miners gathered at a cabin by the San Vicente ciénega and gave a new mining district its name: Silver City.

Just three days later, on June 2, 1870, a boy named Billy Murray was born more than 700 miles away in Fort Laramie, Wyoming — with no idea his life would one day be tied to that same stretch of New Mexico.

At age 10, Billy came west with his family, settling at Fort Selden near Radium Springs. In 1886, when his father was transferred to Fort Bayard, Billy took work there as a military telegraph operator — tapping out messages and witnessing a growing frontier. A year later, restless and enterprising, he opened his own store in Central, New Mexico.

It would be decades before the Murray was built in downtown Silver City — but the town and the man who'd build one of its landmarks were, it turns out, almost exactly the same age.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Ryan this morning! 🐾

He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and his interests are refreshingly simple: walks, pets, and probably snacks (though he'll never confirm the snacks part — very professional). Friendly, well-mannered, and honestly one of the highlights of my morning.

If you spot him out and about with his people, say hello — he's a Murray Hotel resident and one of our favorite furry four-footed regulars.

The Murray Hotel is honored to host the Doña Ana Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution! DAR is a nonprofit, nonpartisan women's service organization founded in 1890, dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism — with members nationwide tracing their lineage back to patriots of the American Revolution.
While you're here this weekend, take some time to explore the heart of downtown, where you can catch live music at The Toad, browse the antiques at Silver City Trading Co. or Manzanita Ridge, take in the local art scene, or grab a bite. Enjoy your stay!
