Some things you just can’t pose. 🤍

You can tell someone where to stand.
You can tell them where to walk.
You can even tell them where the good light is.

But you can’t manufacture the way someone looks at the person they’ve loved for years.

And Angela + Robert made that very obvious.

These two are 58 years old and somehow have the energy of two teenagers who just realized they have a crush on each other. 😂🤍

The touching. The laughing. The kisses. The way they naturally gravitate toward each other every time they’re close.

There was almost nothing to direct because this is just how they are.

And maybe that’s my favorite thing about film.

A photograph can freeze what love looks like.

But film lets you see all the tiny things that happen in between—the glance, the laugh, the hand reaching for the other one without even thinking about it.

After all the years and all the life lived together…

still this sweet on each other. 🍯

Angela + Robert, this one is pretty special.

There are some places where the drive is part of the destination. 🍂🏔️

This was taken on a fall drive through Cooper Landing, winding alongside the Kenai with the mountains ahead and everything around us turning gold.

The kind of road where you stop caring how long Google Maps says you have left because you’re too busy looking out the window.

Windows down. No rush. Take the long way.

Because when you’re in Alaska, sometimes the scenic route is the whole point. 🤍

And when the road finally brings you back to The Back Eddy, we’ll have a place waiting for you on the Kenai.

Come for Alaska. Come home to The Back Eddy.

Alaska already has the mountains.
The rivers.
The wildlife.
The kind of views that make you stop mid-sentence because whatever you were talking about suddenly seems significantly less important.

It has early mornings on the Kenai, long drives where the scenery keeps getting better, and those moments when you realize your camera is never going to quite capture what it feels like to actually stand here.

It’s got just about everything.

But it sure would be prettier with you. 🤍

So if Alaska has been sitting on that “someday” list for a little too long, maybe it’s time to stop watching everyone else experience it.

We’ll have a place waiting for you on the Kenai.

Come for Alaska. Come home to The Back Eddy.

“This is the Alaska I fell in love with.” 🤍

Robert hadn’t been back to Alaska in 20 years.

Years ago, he spent time here as a guide. Alaska became a part of him and there were also moments during those years when things went very wrong and he came frighteningly close to losing his life.

Then life moved forward. Twenty years passed.

And this fall, he finally came back.

Only this time, he brought Angela.

She had never been to Alaska before, so for the first time, Robert got to show his wife this place that had meant so much to him long before she ever got to experience it herself.

There were a few emotional moments during their trip. The colors, especially, seemed to take him right back to the Alaska he remembered.

And at one point he looked around and said:

“This is the Alaska I fell in love with.”

Then came their photo session.

Their daughter had encouraged them to book one with our in-house photographer, and Angela was so excited. But we learned something during the session that made these photographs feel even more important.

Angela + Robert had never had a professional photography session that was just about the two of them.

The last professional photographs they had together were taken at their daughter’s wedding.

And while these were being photographed, it was impossible not to think about her.

Because someday, their daughter isn’t just going to have photographs of her parents standing beside her at her wedding.

She’ll have these.

Her mom and dad laughing together. Holding each other. Looking at each other after all the years and all the life they’ve lived in between.

And she’ll have photographs of her dad back in the Alaska he fell in love with 20 years ago...this time beside the woman he loves.

We photograph so many beginnings. Engagements. Weddings. Babies. Young families.

Maybe we need to get better about photographing the love that stayed.

Angela + Robert, thank you for letting The Back Eddy be part of something this special. These are photographs we hope your family treasures for a very, very long time. 🤍🍂

And we’re not quite finished telling their story. Their film is still to come. 🎥

Come for Alaska. Come home to The Back Eddy.

If our in-house photographer ever gets taken out by a moose… just know she probably tried to sneak one little pet in. 🫎😂

For legal purposes, we would like to make it VERY clear: DO NOT PET THE MOOSE.

They are wild animals. They are unpredictable. They are significantly larger than they look on your phone.

Sabrina understands all of these facts.

Sabrina also sees a moose walking around The Back Eddy and immediately thinks, “Okay, but look how cute he is.”

We’re working on it. 😂

One of the perks of staying right on the Kenai is never quite knowing who might wander through the yard and some of our favorite Alaska moments happen without ever leaving the lodge.

Just admire this particular guest from a very respectful distance. 🫎

Come for Alaska. Come home to The Back Eddy.

Another summer guest thank-you we’ve been meaning to share. 🏔️🎣 Two Brothers come together for a Retirement Celebration!

Clayton + Kevin Pratt called The Back Eddy home during their Alaska trip, and they managed to check off two experiences that belong pretty high on an Alaska bucket list.

They took their Alaska adventure to the next level with a Wolverine Creek–Big River Lake fly-out, where the journey was every bit as memorable as the destination. Their day included incredible bear viewing, salmon fishing, and breathtaking glacier views from the air. Back on the Kenai Peninsula, they also booked two guided trips on the world-renowned Kenai River, chasing silver salmon and making even more Alaska memories along the way.

There are trips where you come home with pictures, and then there are Alaska trips where the pictures involve wild bears, airplanes, salmon and stories that are going to get told for a very long time.

Clayton + Kevin, thank you for choosing The Back Eddy as your home base while you experienced this little corner of Alaska. Congratulations Kevin on your well deserved retirement! We loved having you guys here and hope there’s another Alaska adventure in your future. 🤍

We hired an in-house photographer with approximately zero concept of self-preservation. 📸😂

“Is this turning into a near-death experience? Possibly.
Am I gonna do it anyway? Absolutely.”

Meanwhile, Sabrina is casually making her way along a ledge beside the rushing water at Russian River Falls because apparently “the shot will be worth it” is an acceptable risk assessment.

The good news? She’ll go just about anywhere to document an Alaska adventure.

The bad news? We may eventually need to add “please stop climbing on that” to her job description.

One of the perks of staying at The Back Eddy is having access to our in-house professional photographer whether you want a traditional family or couples session or someone along to document the actual adventure while you’re out experiencing Alaska.

Because sometimes getting the photo means going a little farther than expected.

Apparently, Sabrina took that personally. 😂

A little overdue, but definitely not forgotten. 🤍🎣

We’re catching up on sharing a few of the wonderful guests who called The Back Eddy home this summer, starting with Katherine Graves and her crew…Jon, Anna + Javy.

They joined us back in August and did Alaska the way it should be done: a halibut charter out on the saltwater and a guided salmon fishing trip, with The Back Eddy as home base in between.

We may only have a couple of photos from their adventures, but judging by the fish, they made those days count. 😂🎣

Katherine, Jon, Anna + Javy, thank you for choosing The Back Eddy for your Alaska trip and letting us be a small part of the memories you took home with you. We loved having you and hope Alaska gives you a reason to come back someday. 🤍

When Tamesha and Brent bought The Back Eddy in 2023, they didn’t just buy a lodge.

They chose the projects. The renovations. The landscaping. The flowers. The cabins. The endless list of things that somehow always need fixing, building, improving, or rethinking. 😂

And then they kept choosing it.

Every season. Every project. Every early morning and long day. Every little detail that makes the property feel more like the place they imagined when they first took it on.

Because this didn’t happen overnight. The Back Eddy you see today has been built one decision, one project, and one very nice boulder at a time. 🪨😂

And somehow, even when it gets big, busy, and a little unmanageable…

they still choose it every day. 🤍

You’ll take hundreds of pictures of Alaska.

The mountains. The fish. The bears. The places you waited years to finally see.

But somewhere in between all of that, this is happening too.

Grandpa taking a picture of Grandma because she looked cute sitting on a boulder. A kid finding a place under the stairs that apparently needed exploring. Fishermen swapping a few words before heading down to the Kenai. Guests sitting around the fire telling fishing stories. A family staying outside together long after the sun goes down.

Nothing on the itinerary says, “Remember this part.”

But you will.

These are the little pieces of a trip that quietly become part of the story and exactly why we love having an in-house photographer at The Back Eddy Lodge. Sabrina Guerrero of SG Photography gets to document not only the adventures, but the life happening around them.

Because sometimes the photographs that mean the most aren’t the ones you planned at all. 🤍
