We had another great 4th of July boat parade. We had 4 boats participate this year. Thanks to all who participated, to the judges, to Chris Bouck for organizing, and to our amazing Jose Lake Store for hosting the parade and award ceremony.

Looking forward to a wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend out on Jose Lake. Just a reminder the annual meeting is this Saturday July 5th at 10am at the Goodar Township Hall. The annual boat parade starts at 3pm at the Jose Lake Store.

Water Safety Regulations for Jose Lake
Here are just a few reminders to keep everyone safe out on the water.

1. Waterskiing, jet skiing and tubing between the hours of 10 am and 7 pm only.
2. When jet skiing or towing water skiers or tubers, operate at least 100 feet from all swimmers, anglers, and docks. THIS INCLUDES THE AREAS WHERE THE LAKE NARROWS (BY THE STORE AND BY THE ISLAND), THERE ARE NO WAKE SIGNS, AND BALLOON BUOYS.
3. Respect all swimmers and the designated swimming areas.
4. Jet skiers should NEVER cut across the path of any other watercraft.
5. EXCESSIVE SPEED of any watercraft is always dangerous and is considered reckless. Please use common sense when operating your watercrafts.
6. All watercraft must travel counter clockwise.
7. Never throw refuse in the lake or in the boat ramp area. PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR LAKE AREA CLEAN.
8. There is no parking at the lake's boat ramp.
9. Obey all rules of water safety and boating that have been established in the State of Michigan Boating Guide.

Share these regulations with any friends, family, or renters you may have who will be using the lake this summer so we can keep our lake as safe as possible. Have a wonderful and safe 4th of July!!

Help keep the area around Jose Lake clean by participating in the annual Clean-Up Day this Saturday May 3rd at 9am. Meet at the Mickey and Joyce Taylor's House (7123 Nicole Drive) to receive your area to clean. There will be a cook out afterwards. Hope to see everyone there!!

Join Michigan Sea Grant and partners for a webinar all about algae, the tiny living things at the foundation of aquatic food webs.

In March, our "HABs 101" webinar dove deep into harmful algal blooms. Now, we're zooming out to learn about algae’s vital role in aquatic ecosystems and get to know didymo, cladophora, and other types of algae that cause problems here in Michigan.

Are you curious about the water quality of Jose Lake? Have questions about w**d control program? Read on!

Our relationship with PLM Lake and Land Management to manage invasive w**ds has been extended for another 2 years. As part of our partnership with PLM our account representative, Michael Pichla, will provide an update on Jose Lake water quality and w**d management plans.

The Zoom meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 2 from 6-6:45 pm. The meeting will include a presentation of the 2023 treatment program, results of our annual water quality survey, potential threats and the treatment plan for this coming year. There will be time for Q&A as well. This session will be recorded and posted on Facebook for viewing at your convenience. If you are interested in attending or have questions add your name to the comments or message me directly.

What's this green goo? Get the scoop on harmful algal blooms (HABs) in an upcoming "HABs 101" webinar, hosted by Michigan Sea Grant and partners around the state (including the Center for Lakes and Streams).

Learn about Michigan’s inland lakes online from MSU Extension

Registration for the award-winning Michigan State University Extension Introduction to Lakes Online course is now open! This introductory six-week online course kicks off January 30th and is designed for anyone interested in inland lakes including concerned residents, decision makers, local leaders, and lakefront property owners. Course instructors include faculty from MSU Extension and state agency personnel.

Course topics include lake ecology, watershed management, shoreline protection, aquatic plants, Michigan water law, and community engagement. These six topics are explored online through video lectures, interactive activities, and discussion forums. Additional resources are also provided for those looking to dive deeper into a topic. Participants communicate with each other and instructors through lively discussion forums and biweekly Ask-an-Expert webinars which include guests from organizations such as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Registration is open now through January 28, 2024. The cost of the course is $115 per person. Register by January 12, 2024, for an early bird price of $95 per person. A limited number of scholarships are available. Current individual members of the Michigan Lakes and Streams Association are eligible to receive a $95 reimbursement upon successful completion of the course.

A certificate of completion is awarded to those who complete the course. Students also can receive continuing education credits, including 16 Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Pesticide Applicator Re-Certification credits and educational hours in the MSU Extension Master Gardener, Master Citizen Planner, and Master Naturalist programs.
