Summer’s Still Here!! Here-ish!!!

The backpacks are coming out, school is starting, and you can definitely feel summer beginning to slow down, but wait…We’re not ready yet.

There’s still time for sandy toes, warm-water swims, boat rides, ice cream downtown, long walks along the lake, sunset watching, and those last-minute “let’s just stay one more night” kind of weekends.

And there’s still plenty happening around South Haven this week and weekend!

So yes, the school-year routine is creeping back in… but summer isn’t over until we say it is. 😉

Blueberry Festival just wrapped, the crowds have thinned out, and the town is doing the thing it does every year around this time: quietly turning into a completely different kind of beautiful. If your only South Haven memory is packed beaches and a parking meter running, you haven't actually seen the town yet. Fall is when it shows you who it really is.

We've been renting homes here for years, and if you ask us honestly, fall is the season we'd send our own family to if we only got to visit once. Fewer crowds, cooler mornings, a downtown that slows back down to walking pace, and a whole calendar of things to do that never make it into the summer brochures. I thought a little history lesson might be fun today. Let’s talk about one of South Haven’s most recognizable landmarks, our drawbridge!

It’s easy to cross it, watch it open for a boat, or pause for a photo and never really think about how much history is tucked into that little span over the Black River.

The Bridge That Connected South Haven…

Long before we watched boats wait for the drawbridge to open, crossing the Black River meant taking a ferry.

Then came South Haven’s first wooden drawbridge in the 1850s. Historical sources differ on the exact year, 1856 on the historic marker and 1859 in the City’s timeline, but either way, it changed everyday life in South Haven by connecting the two sides of the river.

And the bridge has been named for the Dyckman family ever since. Barney H. Dyckman supervised construction of the early wooden bridge and was an important figure in South Haven’s development.

Of course, that wasn’t the end of the story. The bridge we know today came along in 1903, but it stands in the footsteps of those earlier bridges that helped South Haven grow into the community we know and love today.

Sometimes the best history lessons are right in our own backyard. ❤️
