Remembering the Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse.

On September 15, 2001, a tugboat pushing four barges struck the Queen Isabella Causeway, causing sections of the bridge to collapse into the Laguna Madre. Eight people lost their lives, while three others survived the fall.

The tragedy left a lasting mark on our community. The causeway was the only roadway connecting South Padre Island to the mainland, and its collapse temporarily cut off that vital connection. In the days that followed, local fishermen, emergency responders, residents, businesses, and countless others came together to help their neighbors and keep the island connected.

Today, the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway continues to stand as a vital link between South Padre Island and Port Isabel—and as a reminder of the eight lives that were lost:

Labor Day Weekend marks the end of the 2026 Summer Season on SPI!

The summer season "officially" begins on Memorial Day Weekend with a short rush of people ready for summer at the beach, then winds down a bit; only to pick up around mid-June and peaks on the 4th of July. It remains consistently busy the entire month of July and up until the first week of August once the kids go back to school.

Fishing tournaments keep the Island busy during August and weekends are still generally busy during September/October since the water is still warm and SPI is a short drive away from anyone living in the Rio Grande Valley.

Rates at hotels and short-term rentals go to "off-season" pricing, there are no waits at restaurants, the water is still warm, the fishing is great, the waves are fun, and the weather is generally perfect in October! Fall is "Postcard Weather"!

Fall is also a great time of year to visit if you are in the market to purchase a home/condo on and around the Island. It can be difficult to access properties during the peak season since most are occupied with guests.
