Well, it's official - the end of an era - 13 years as stewards of this amazing Southwest Harbor landmark! Last month we sold Kingsleigh Inn to Friends of Acadia (FOA).
The sale is bittersweet as we will deeply miss hosting our guests as they discover or, frequently, re-discover the joys of MDI.
However, it is gratifying to be part of an historic partnership between FOA and the National Park Service (NPS). This arrangement will provide an important step forward in the on-going mission of bringing more quality housing for Acadia's seasonal park service employees.
While we can no longer offer B&B accommodations, we still have our vacation rental, Harbor Oasis, just down the hill from the Inn and right on the harbor. Find out more at www.harboroasis.me

Recently, I (Greg Hartford) created a graphic showing some images that had to be cropped for a well-known hospital in Boston. The poster like graphic appeared to be received well as it showed several images. Here is one that I just pulled together (Sorry, had to update the image.):

Black-capped chickadee: Remembers where it stored a tiny seed last month.

Me: Forgets where I put my car keys five minutes ago.

Black-capped chickadees’ amazing memory helps them live through Acadia’s long, cold winters. These little birds begin collecting seeds in the fall and will hide them in thousands of different nooks and crannies throughout their territory. Chickadees are able to remember where they stored, or “cached” those seeds several weeks later. As the temperatures drop and food becomes scarce, these previously hidden seeds will provide enough food for them to survive.

Studies show that black-capped chickadees replace old brain cells with new ones each fall, thus creating space to hold new memories. The hippocampus, which is the part of the brain responsible for memory, actually grows larger – just in time to help chickadees remember where they stored all of their valuable goodies!

Who else is envious of these “bird brains?”

On this date in history 75 years ago, Oct 23, 1947, the wind shifted and drove a massive fire six miles in three hours, burning a swath three miles wide across Mount Desert Island. The fire skirted the business district of Bar Harbor, but razed 170 permanent homes, 67 seasonal estates on "Millionaires' Row" and five large historic hotels. At least 400 people fled by sea. Finally, by 9 pm, bulldozers opened a pathway through the rubble on Route 3 and a caravan of 700 cars carrying 2,000 people drove a slow trip to safety in Ellsworth. The fire, which began on Oct 17, was not pronounced completely out until 4 pm on Nov 14, nearly one month after it began. More than 17,000 acres had burned, including more than 10,000 acres of Acadia National Park. Learn more at https://www.nps.gov/acad/learn/historyculture/fireof1947.htm
