Pause! Breathe! Honor the Dignity of Work!

We honor the physical work that holds life together: the hands that farm, clean, cook, lift, repair, drive, and staff the places where we rely on care and steadiness.

We honor the mental work, often unseen, of staying strong when systems try to wear you down; translating experiences into education; carrying the emotional labor of being vigilant, thoughtful, and resilient in spaces that weren’t built for you.

We can’t talk about Labor Day without acknowledging the long history behind the word labor itself. Generations were forced to labor under brutality and coercion. And, families building wealth and stability while being denied fair wages, safe workplaces, and equal protection. Even today, many are still overworked, underpaid, and undervalued, while their contributions keep the economy running and the country moving.

And yet, there is dignity in labor. Remember I think in songs, so the church hymn “Come Labor On” immediately popped into my head. It’s a reminder that work can be an offering, and that faith calls us to keep pursuing justice because real rest and real freedom require real respect for the labor of others.

So today, we honor workers across nationalities and backgrounds, their grit, their skill, their humanity, and their hope.

Oh death’s sting…

The walls of Clevedale are filled with art, many made by the hand of people we know personally. These two pieces are works by Tracy Council, one of the finest human beings known, who lost her battle with cancer. Serendipitously, our dear Tracy was the founder of Tracy’s Kids, a non profit organization that utilized art therapy in the treatment of children with cancer. Her family posted her final writing, giving you a glimpse into her personhood. RIP, Tracy.

Heaven is not for the Worthy By Tracy Councill
June 25-28, 2026

Heaven is not for the worthy, it's for the loved. If there is such a thing, we all get in if we want to, because every single one of us is loved. That's the good news. I have never longed to go to heaven when I die. It's already where I live. I've also spent many hours in what seemed a living hell. Hell might be for everyone too. I guess that's the bad news. Heaven is Earth, when it is loved.

I have cultivated beauty, found love, put myself at the mercy of compassion, and worked to bring that compassion to everyone I meet. I have eased suffering when I could, and found great joy in doing so. I have done my best to be mindful of the stranger. I have made mistakes too numerous to count, but they don't add up to much, because I haven't saved them.

I love children more than anything. I have loved being a mom, and working with kids, and I love simply watching kids in the neighborhood as they go about their lives. I have practiced my art through it all, filling my eyes and heart with places and people I want to see. My imagination takes me to heaven every day. If I have to leave all this behind, I will be mad. I wanted 20 more years—and why not? If I get more years, this will still be just as true, but it is the threat of nearing the end of my life that sends my mind in this direction.

I am only in control of how I respond to this moment. I didn't cause it. I don't want it. I reject it out of hand. But if I must go, you all must carry on loving and serving and creating. Tend your gardens. Make your art. Make music. Make friends whenever you can. And I hope some of your friends are kids, because kids are the most fun.

The community gathered for Lucy Anne’s Ribbon Cutting! And, Clevedale’s Pontheolla was in the house!

The latest addition to downtown Spartanburg’s culinary scene is located in the historic Citizens and Southern Bank building at the corner of Main and Magnolia bringing Italian cuisine with a Southern twist.

Chef Michael Rednak, the dreamer, is known for his homemade pasta and his signature collard green Caesar salad.

Here’s another great example of how “History meets hospitality in the Hub City!”

Yesterday’s Gratitude Dinner replaced PorchTalk as we continue celebrating 13 years in business. The community gathered were all a part of Clevedale’s journey. From our banking friends to our 1st long-term stay overseas exec to one of our very 1st catering relationships, the evening was magical! The food-delish, the conversations about gratitude-rich, and the bonus of a keepsake box and the presentation of Blaq Picasso’s artistic interpretation of Clevedale was the icing on the cake.

“Never tire of saying thanks!”

When I saw Monica and Daniel Edwards on our reservation, it didn’t occur to me that they’re the owners of The Moorhead Inn in Durham, NC. 🙄
When they arrived, it clicked and I’ll be honest, nervousness set in. Would they like their room, our brand of hospitality, and oh our breakfast?

They were a delight! We shared stories and experiences over drinks and again at breakfast with our other guests, also Edwards! Coincidence or the stars aligning? April and Jim were celebrating their 12th anniversary. 💛 A great weekend of hosting!

WE MADE IT! We celebrate the progress and honor the trials. After all, that’s what molded and shaped the business and us as owners. Swipe through and see a few real moments towards resilience that built our 13 years.

➡️ The financing saga taught us faith and focus.
➡️ Tornado and hurricane days reminded us to keep going as “storms don’t last always.”
➡️ The COVID pandemic caused us to get creative and pivot.
➡️ Staffing challenges shaped our resilience and our culture.
