Iron Creek Lake is one of the better family-friendly trout lakes in the northern Black Hills. The lake is approximately 23 acres, located about 12 miles southwest of Spearfish, and is known primarily for rainbow trout, with crappie and bass also present. The lake is regularly stocked by SD GFP and natural reproduction also contributes to the fishery.
What fish can you catch?
Rainbow Trout
* The main attraction.
* Most commonly caught species in the lake.
* Typical fish caught are 15-20 inches or so.
* Fish over 20 inches are caught periodically.
* The lake has developed a reputation for producing some surprisingly large rainbows for its size.
Yellow Perch
* Nice-sized perch are present.
* Fun for kids and excellent table fare.
* Often found around w**d edges and structure.
Bass
* Largemouth bass are present.
* Not the primary fishery, but anglers occasionally catch quality bass.
How accessible is it?
One of Iron Creek’s biggest strengths is accessibility.
✅ Excellent shoreline access
* Much of the shoreline is fishable.
* The one-mile trail around the lake allows anglers to reach multiple spots.
* Kids and seniors can fish comfortably from shore.
✅ Boat and kayak friendly
* No wake boats or high-speed watercraft.
* Canoes, kayaks, and small boats work extremely well.
* Because the lake is small, anglers can easily cover the entire lake in a kayak.
✅ Great for families
* Trout are often reachable from shore.
* Easy walking terrain.
* Nearby store for bait, tackle, licenses, snacks, and meals.
Why anglers like Iron Creek
People like it because:
* It’s scenic and quiet.
* Easy to reach from Spearfish.
* Excellent for beginners and children.
* Consistent trout action, with surprisingly good size fish for the size of the lake.
* Beautiful Black Hills setting with osprey, eagles, and pine-covered hills.
If someone asked me for a Black Hills lake where a grandparent can comfortably fish with grandchildren and have a realistic chance of catching trout from shore, Iron Creek Lake would be near the top of the list. The combination of easy access, steady trout stocking, calm water, and family-friendly fishing is what makes it special.
