Better views without stress: Observation Point (East Mesa) sits 1,000+ feet higher with 270-degree views. No chains, no exposure, no lottery. 6-8 miles. Many say views are better than Angels Landing.

Flexibility without permits: West Rim to Scout Lookout (2.4 miles, 1,190 feet gain) gives spectacular views with no lottery. Continue on West Rim for more scenery and solitude.

Family-friendly: Canyon Overlook is 1 mile, easy for kids, jaw-dropping views in 30-45 min. Drive to east side- no shuttle needed.

Sunset/sunrise: Watchman Trail (3.1 miles from Visitor Center) is the best sunset spot. Watch golden light hit canyon walls. 368 feet gain, moderate effort.

Angels Landing is iconic, but these often deliver what guests actually want- better views, less stress, family options, or flexibility.

WHAT GUESTS OVERPACK:
1) Jeans for hiking -
Too restrictive and heavy. Save jeans for evenings in Springdale. Pack moisture-wicking hiking pants instead.

2) Cotton workout clothes -
Stay wet, cause chafing, take forever to dry. Synthetics only for the trail.

3) Single-use plastic water bottles -
Bring a reusable, trusty one (2-3 liter capacity total). You’ll fill at LaFave before heading out.

4) Light-colored clothes -
Zion’s red dirt stains everything. Either leave white/cream/pastels at home, or only bring things you don’t mind getting a little Zion red on them.

WHAT GUESTS ACTUALLY NEED:
1) Hiking boots (already broken in) -
For trails. Test them at home first.

2) 2-3 moisture-wicking hiking outfits -
Quick-dry shirts, hiking pants/shorts. You’ll shower and change at LaFave between morning hikes and evening relaxation.

3) Layers for morning hikes -
Light jacket, fleece. Mornings are 20-30°F cooler. You’ll shed them by 10am.

4) Swimsuit -
For the hot tub at sunset with red rock views. This is non-negotiable luxury.

5) Comfortable evening wear -
One nice casual outfit for Springdale restaurants after you’ve showered and recovered.

6) Sun protection -
SPF 50+ sunscreen, wide-brim hat, sunglasses, UPF shirt for summer trails.

7) Reusable water bottles -
2-3 liter total capacity. Fill at LaFave before heading out.

The rhythm: 👇
hike hard in the morning, return to luxury amenities by afternoon, hot tub at sunset, nice dinner in town. Pack for both experiences.

2) Observation Point (East Mesa):
1,000+ feet higher than Angels Landing, 270-degree views, no chains. 6-8 miles. Main route closed, but East Mesa access open.

3) Canyon Overlook:
1 mile, 30-45 minutes. Massive views into Zion Canyon. East side- drive yourself, no shuttle.

4) Watchman Trail:
3.1 miles from Visitor Center. Best sunset views overlooking Springdale and canyon.

PRIORITIZE THIS👇
Morning:
The Narrows
Temple of Sinawava upstream through Virgin River.
Wall Street section (1 mile in) = most dramatic scenery with 20-30 foot wide canyon and 1,000-foot walls. Continue to Big Spring (2 miles) if you have energy.

Rent gear day before:
canyoneering boots ($25-30), neoprene socks ($5-10), walking stick ($10-15) from Springdale.

Finish -Return to La Fave, lunch, change.

Afternoon: Pick based on energy
1) High energy:
West Rim to Scout Lookout (4.8 miles round-trip, 1,190 feet gain, 2.5-3 hours)

2) Moderate energy:
Canyon Overlook (1 mile, 30-45 min, drive to east side)

3) Low energy:
Hot tub at LaFave, recovery with canyon views

Sunset: Match your afternoon choice
1) Active:
Canyon Junction Bridge (10-min walk, iconic Watchman views)

2) Easy:
Pa’rus Trail (flat, paved, walk any distance)

3) Relaxed:
Balcony or hot tub with wine

Why this order👇
The Narrows is Zion’s most unique experience- you can’t replicate walking through a river between towering walls. Everything else is flexible based on how you feel after.

Zero permits needed. 2-9 miles total depending on choices.

“I hiked into the canyon” vibes:
Riverside Walk (2.2 miles, flat, paved). Towering walls, Virgin River, hanging gardens. Dramatic Narrows scenery in first half-mile- no water gear needed.

Sweeping canyon overlooks:
Canyon Overlook (1 mile, 163 feet, 30-45 min). Views into lower canyon from above. East side- no shuttle. Looks like summit photo, takes under an hour.

Golden hour magic:
Watchman Trail (3.1 miles, 368 feet). Best sunset spot. Views over Springdale and canyon. Start 2 hours before sunset. Moderate effort, unbeatable light on red rocks.

“Pristine wilderness” aesthetic:
Lower Emerald Pool (1.2 miles, minimal elevation). Waterfall, pool, lush greenery. Feels like hidden oasis. Best spring/summer. Mostly paved, shaded.

Epic scale with river:
Pa’rus Trail (3.5 miles, flat, paved). River in foreground, Watchman in background. Walk or bike any distance. Wheelchair accessible, dogs allowed.

None require 1,500+ feet climbing. All look like you conquered the mountain.
Save this to help you plan your perfect Zion trip! ✨🙌

First-timers hear “Angels Landing” and assume it’s the only rim hike. Here’s what we wish they knew 👇

ANGELS LANDING ISN’T THE HIGHEST
Observation Point: 6,521 feet.
Angels Landing: 5,790 feet. That’s 731 feet higher. From Observation Point, you see Angels Landing below you plus broader 270-degree canyon views.

PERMIT LOTTERY IS BRUTAL
Angels Landing: You can plan your trip around it and still not get one.
Observation Point: No permit needed.

EXPOSURE ISN’T FOR EVERYONE
Angels Landing: Chains section with 1,000+ foot drop-offs on both sides. Can be terrifying if you fear heights.
Observation Point: Regular mountain trail. No chains, no exposure. Challenging but not scary.

DIFFICULTY DIFFERS
Angels Landing: 5.4 miles, 1,488 feet gain, plus mental challenge of chains.
Observation Point (East Mesa): 6-8 miles, similar elevation but more gradual through ponderosa forest.

ACCESS MATTERS
Angels Landing: Grotto shuttle stop, subject to wait times.
Observation Point: Drive to east side, no shuttle. Main route closed, East Mesa open.

THE POINT:
Angels Landing is iconic- chains, exposure, bragging rights. But first-timers often don’t realize Observation Point exists, sits higher, has broader views, needs no permit, and doesn’t require extreme exposure comfort.

Both excellent. Know what you’re choosing between.
