๐Hours Update This Week ๐ NC Outdoor Adventures will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
We're using these two days to be proactive and stay ahead of the drought conditions affecting rivers across the Southeast. Our team will be scouting additional adventure locations around Lake James and along the Catawba River near Marion so we can continue offering safe and memorable experiences no matter what Mother Nature throws our way.
๐ง The Reality of the Drought
Low water levels are creating challenges for river outfitters all across the Southeast. While we can't control the weather, one thing that sets NC Outdoor Adventures apart is our diversity. With 25+ adventures and unique lodging options, we have the flexibility to pivot and keep the fun going!
Many of our adventures are not water-level dependent, including:
๐๏ธ Waterfall & Swim Hole Tours
๐ง Climbing Adventures
๐ชข Waterfall Rappelling
๐ฅพ Nighttime salamander Hikes
๐ Neon Nights: celestial kayak trips with dinner ๐ฝ ๐ญ
And here's some exciting newsโif the Toe River gets too low for our Neon Nights tours, we now have an alternative location at beautiful Lake James! โจ๐ฃ
๐ฃ River Conditions Update
River tubing, kayaking & +++ in Western NC Mountains is still operating!
A few things to keep in mind:
๐ Float times are a bit longer due to lower water levels.
๐ Stay in the main current whenever possible.
๐ฃ There are a handful of shallow spots where you'll need to walk a few steps to reach deeper water.
But these changes have created something pretty special...
๐๏ธ The new islands formed after Helene are full of literal hidden gems! Take a moment to explore and you may discover:
๐ Hidden gems
โจ Sparkling mica
๐ฎ Clear quartz crystals ("Appalachian diamonds")
The swim hole is still absolutely delightful, with crystal-clear water where you can watch fish swim beneath your feet. ๐
If you'd like a smoother, more controlled float, we currently recommend flatwater kayaks over tubes during these lower water conditions.
๐ And don't forget...
Our Penland Boulder Garden Whitewater Trips are still running strong! These trips include:
โ๏ธ Learning whitewater paddling skills
โ๏ธ Swimming in crystal-clear water
โ๏ธ Boulder jumping
โ๏ธ A fun little waterfall drop into a deep swimming hole
No matter the conditions, we're committed to finding ways to keep you exploring, making memories, and falling in love with these mountains all over again. โค๏ธ๐๏ธ
