A couple of years ago we started showcasing each of the houses that make up the Frederick House, but since we’re not great about staying on top of social media, we never finished introducing them all. Recently we’ve had a lot of questions about the different houses, so our plan is to introduce each one over the next week.

First up is the Young House.

Contrary to its name, the Young House is the oldest house on our property. Town maps show that there was a structure there as far back as 1810. To the best of our knowledge, the current house is still that original structure, but with 2 centuries of various renovations.

The house is named after one of its owners, though we’re lacking knowledge of who Young was. What we do know is that a doctor Walter S Whitmore lived in the house in the early 1900s. Dr. Whitmore and another local doctor, Dr. Catlett, opened the Augusta Sanatorium in 1910, a facility that was known for its excellent modern medical care for chronically ill patients. Today the old sanatorium is part of the Mary Baldwin University campus.

The Young House has 4 guest rooms:
1. Young 11 - 2nd floor Family suite with 2 bedrooms; 1 queen bed (bedroom 1) and 2 twin beds (bedroom 2); a separate sitting room and a private bathroom with shower/tub combo
2. Young 12 - 1st floor Queen suite with a sitting room, and private bathroom with a shower/tub combo
3. Young 13 - Basement level Family room with 1 queen bed and 2 twins, with a sitting area; private bathroom with a shower
4. Young 23 - 1st floor Economy room with a full size bed; private bathroom with shower

Also, as a heads up if you’re visiting Staunton: this picture is an excellent depiction of the town itself. Please note that Staunton is on a hill. If you’re walking around town, there will likely be stairs or steep sidewalks that you’ll need to navigate during your stroll.

Hi everyone! Please read to understand where the proceeds from our tea events go. Meet Ziggy. Ziggy is one of the cats at Wendy's Place Cat Rescue, which we also run. Ziggy is currently very sick and his vet bills are stacking up. At the moment he doesn’t have a definitive diagnosis, but we’ll update once he does. This Saturday, April 4, we’ll be hosting an Easter Tea here at the Frederick House. All proceeds from this tea will go directly to Wendy’s Place, and specifically, to Ziggy’s vet bills. If you can’t make it to our tea, but would still like to help, you can donate directly to Wendy’s Place via PayPal or Venmo, or by purchasing something from our Amazon wishlist.

The link for tea reservations, and all donation links can be found at LinkTr.ee/WendysPlace

More detailed information about our upcoming tea event can be found in our pinned posts.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Wendy’s Place in the past. We understand that not all of our guests are cat people (which is why we don’t have the cats in any guest areas), but we’ve been extremely fortunate to have so much support from so many of our guests in the past. We’re grateful to you all ❤️.
