How do you take your marshmallow? Golden or burnt?

Some people hold it in the flame until it’s a charcoal briquette, black and crackling. Others turn it slowly for a light golden brown, molten all the way through. Either way, it ends the same: the ooze of marshmallow, chocolate going soft on a warm graham cracker, sticky fingers nobody bothers to wipe.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

No offense to December, but in Southern Vermont, it’s right now. Hillsides turning red and yellow, color drifting down to the Battenkill.

Cold mornings, warm afternoons, and every reason to take a drive to find hot apple c***r.

The season of color has begun. The first color of fall at Hill Farm is in the meadow, not the trees. Goldenrod comes into full bloom, a wide sweep of yellow that catches the afternoon light.

Goldenrod blooms late, when much of the season’s other flowers are finished, so it becomes a last big meal for native bees and butterflies before the cold arrives.

The hillsides are just starting to turn. Come see it while it builds near Manchester, Vermont.
