Gateway Park is just a short walk across the street from our place. It's a 13 acre park that has a small beach, a large pavilion, modern restrooms, a fishing pier, a boat launch, and cement play animals for the kids. Gateway has a great wraparound view of Lake Huron to the north and east, and the south shore is a nice stretch of the Tawas River.

I like to visit this park in the morning and evening. It's a peaceful place to relax, watch ducks, and see all the vibrant sky colors from the sunrise and sunset. And if you're ever here on a weekend, check out the Northeast Michigan Farm Market from 8 am -1 pm every Saturday in the park.

If you enjoy hiking and exploring natural areas, we have some beautiful trails in the Tawas area. Check out the link below for descriptions and trail maps.

One of the best ways to see Michigan’s Sunrise Coast is on foot, whether you want to tour the National Forest, take a day hike along one of the most scenic rivers in the world, stroll along a beach with your children or go backpacking along a stretch of the Lake Huron Trail.

BIRD MIGRATION DAYS
May 12th & 13th, 2023
Tawas Point State Park
686 Tawas Beach Rd, East Tawas

Tawas Point is well known for high concentrations of migrating warblers during the month of May. Species highlights have included Kirtland’s Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, White-crowned Sparrow, numerous raptors, shorebirds, and more. During past festivals, participants were able to record 178 species!

Birding and Photography volunteers will be available at Tawas Point (Free to all) 8 a.m. – Dusk on Friday & Saturday.

Information will be available for birding spots that include Hale, Oscoda, Tawas City, and East Tawas, such as Tuttle Marsh, Iargo Springs, Lumberman’s Monument, and the Scenic River Road Byway.

A bird sighting list will be on display near the lighthouse trail-head on Friday & Saturday and a shorebird identification station will be set up on the South shore of the point. For those interested in Tuttle Marsh, the United States Forest Service may offer a Guided Tour.

This past weekend we took a walk down to the Ausable river at Lumberman's Monument. The autumn colors are gorgeous and the river is crystal clear. I've been to many places in the state of Michigan, but this will always be one of my favorite views.

It's an easy 20 minute drive from here through the Huron-Manistee National Forest.
