Back when we were dreaming up the Dandy Flats, we had a great conversation with our good friend Joy, owner of the Billy Motel & 'Ish Kitchen, about what makes an inspiring space. We agreed that the best spaces are like a cool aunt's flat in Paris, where she's collected things she loves over a lifetime, each with a story to tell over drinks...

That's a tall order, perhaps oxymoronic in most spaces intended for hospitality - but it's certainly doable.

We've occupied this building for nearly a decade now, and I don't think there's a place inside or out we haven't touched and repaired in some capacity. Now, as we fill it up with works that we love, the stories grow.

One of those is the beautiful design work by - a UK artist, maker and creative practitioner specializing in screen printed textiles. Her work explores the connections between art and science - from the human body to nature. Please check out her portfolio and shop!

We opted to source yardage of the Lichen Speckle Shimmer fabric and collaborated with another incredible textile artist, , to custom upholster Sally's work on the cushions of this square barrel back armchair by . Even the chair has so much wonderful detail - an heirloom piece for sure.

This is a fine example of everything coming together while giving this corner of the Nonchalant Flat a wonderful place to tuck into.

The apples are ripening. The wild flowers are exploding. The mushrooms are popping. The sunlight is shifting. The days are shortening. Soon, the leaves will be falling.

The transition to fall feels early this year, signaling one of the most stunning times to be in Appalachia.

And while the rest of the country is experiencing scorching heat and drought, this summer has been a welcome respite. We've had day after day of clear skies and cool, crisp mornings (we woke up to 45 degrees today), with just enough rain to keep the forests healthy.

Come explore the mountains and step into tiny town life this fall and into the holidays. Our calendar is now open through January 31st.

Naming things is tough.  It's no different working through a new identity for a building. Historically, the building was referred to as the Hoffman Building - named after Dr. Olin Huntley Hoffman, a surgeon who moved to Thomas in 1887.  We passed on using the historical name for a few reasons. 1) History is often romanticized and not pretty. We don't know who Dr. Hoffman was or how he behaved, and we weren't about to eternalize a person for historical sake 2) Thomas is not the town that it was 135 years ago. While most preservationists want to rebuild model train sets of old historic towns and emulate the past, our position is to look forward, all the while paying homage to the integrity and detail of the built environment in the late 19th century. So we landed on the "Dandy".  It was inspired by the artistic style known as Dandyism - a movement marked by excessive refinement that was prominent during Thomas' hay days and a hallmark in the emergence of "self-making" and personal style.  There is also a fun story behind the artwork. When we purchased the building, the third-story loft was full of vintage tube amp TVs. One of them had a striking gold 'uhf' logo on it.  As we were working, it continued to grab us. So we ran with it and sent the photo posted here to our bestie to create a "dandy" mark based on the "uhf" design logic.  Because we wanted most of what is at the Dandy to be original and handmade, we then passed the file to to hand letter the mark so it would have an organic/human feel to it. Last, but not least, we needed decorative marks to align it with the interiors.  Our obsession with clashing dead mauve with cherry red and magenta was unending, so we kept with that palette and asked to bring this all to life, and she certainly did - providing endless decorative marks for consideration.  So there you have it, the Dandy mark. A 136-year-old tale from a surgeon's commercial building, to an abandoned TV with pretty gold letters that two g**s couldn't stop staring at, to all the incredible designers we are so fortunate to have within our circle of friends, and to the future of personal style.
