Townsend, Tennessee is like travelling back in time. 🪵🥾Compared to the busy side of the Smokies like Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg, TN – Townsend is a breath of fresh air. It’s quiet, surrounded by nature, has an awesome food scene and only has one traffic light.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and experience the Great Smoky Mountains in the most quintessential way, here’s 3 things that you must add to your itinerary.

1. Look Rock Tower 🥾
Located on the Foothills Parkway, Look Rock Tower is a scenic 20 minute drive from Townsend. To get to the lookout, it’s a paved 1 mile round trip (that is more of an uphill walk than a hike) and delivers spectacular views of the Smoky Mountains and the valley below.

2. Tuckaleechee Caverns 🏔️
Known as the Greatest Site Under the Smokies, this huge cave system goes hundreds of miles underground. An amazing adventure for young and old, this is the perfect excursion for when the weather outside is not ideal. Take the Tuckaleechee Caverns full tour (approx. 90 minutes & 1.25 miles) through these ancient caves and explore the tallest subterranean waterfall in the Eastern U.S. This is definitely one for the books.

3. Fly fishing with Little River Outfitters 🎣
This family-owned fly shop and school Little River Outfitters will fully equip you with everything you need for a day of fly fishing. There are over 800 miles of fishable trout streams in Great Smoky Mountains National Park alone. A beautiful past time and an experience your kids won’t soon forget.

Save this for your next trip to Townsend, Tennessee and take a trip back in time for the perfect mountain getaway.

From the peaks to the valleys of the Great Smoky Mountains, here’s when to expect fall foliage during the most beautiful season in Tennessee. 🍂🍁

It all begins at the highest elevations (over 5500ft) where the colors begin late September and into October. Red, orange and golden yellow start to appear from the dogwood, sugar maple and sourwood trees.

The spectacular autumn scene begins in the peaks and moves to the valleys reaching peak color between mid-October and early November. It is said that the Smokies hold an estimated thirteen trillion leaves which is why the color season stretches seven weeks or longer.

Planning your fall visit and hoping to avoid the crowds during the busiest season in the Smokies? Stay at Tremont Lodge & Resort where there’s no crowds, just nature and breathing room to relax and unwind. 🍂🥾🪵

First time hiking in the Smoky Mountains? 🥾 Save these trails for your trip.

One of the best parts about staying in Townsend, Tennessee is having Great Smoky Mountains National Park right in your backyard, with hikes for just about every kind of day you have planned.

🌲 Spruce Flats Falls — A shorter waterfall hike right in the Tremont area. Expect some rocky, root-filled terrain along the way, but the watertall at the end makes this one well worth adding to your list.

💦 Middle Prong Trail — Follow the river through the Tremont area with cascades and plenty of classic Smoky Mountain scenery along the way. This is a great option when you want to spend a little more time on the trail.

🌿 Little River Trail — Starting in Elkmont, the beginning of this trail is relatively wide and flat with minimal elevation gain, making it a good choice if you’re looking for a more relaxed hike.

🏔️ Abrams Falls — A 5-mile round-trip hike through Cades Cove that leads to a 25-foot waterfall. If this one is on your list this September, check current trail conditions before you head out, as temporary weekday closures are in place.

And the best part? When you stay in Townsend, you can spend your morning on the trail, your afternoon exploring the peaceful side of the Smokies, and your evening back at Tremont Lodge.

Save this for your next trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and send it to the person you want to hike the Smokies with.
