Okay, technically these little guys are donkeys, but we couldn’t let the day go by without celebrating their mule cousins.

The Sonoran Desert around Tanque Verde Ranch gets two rainy seasons a year. A gentler one in winter, and the summer monsoon, which brings short, intense afternoon storms through late summer.

Horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and supervised kids' programs, are all part of a standard stay, along with evening entertainment. Not every activity at Tanque Verde Ranch involves a saddle. Some afternoons are better spent at a workbench, learning a skill that's as much a part of Western heritage as horseback riding is.

We offer hands-on workshops in watercolor painting, copper tooling, pewter sculpting, and silversmithing, where guests can make something to take home. It's an adventure where you can sit still long enough to get to know the person next to you.

If you've never ridden a horse before, the Walk Ride at Tanque Verde Ranch is built for you. Every first-timer starts with a fifteen-minute primer covering mounting, steering, and basic control before heading out on an hour-long desert trail.

A few notes if you're planning your first ride, wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, arrive fifteen minutes early for check-in, and don't worry about looking like an expert. Most first-time riders tell us the nerves disappear about ten minutes in, right around when the trail opens up and the Rincon Mountains come into view.

People ask us what a day looks like here, so here's the fall version.

Morning starts cool enough for a trail ride or a hike without watching the clock for heat. Midday, the pool's still warm enough to use and afternoon is whatever you want it to be. Fishing at Lake Corchran, a workshop, a lesson, or just enjoying the view.
