Our living willow structure just multiplied.
The willows have slowed down on growing UP lately -- but they’ve been putting out side branches like crazy.
Since our goal is to train long, strong canes for the structure, I trimmed some of that side growth…and absolutely could not bring myself to waste it.
So I cut the branches into 10-inch pieces, carefully kept each willow cultivar labeled, and stuck them in jars of water.
Less than TWO WEEKS later -- ROOTS. 🙌
I now have at least three times as many willow cuttings as I started with!
And I already have plans for every one of them. I’m planting additional willows at each point so I’ll eventually have multiple canes to train diagonally in both directions, plus a cane growing straight up and over the arch. The goal is a dense, strong, woven living structure that gets better every year.
There’s something ridiculously satisfying about building something out of plants…and then having the plants make more building materials for you.
Next up: planting all these babies.
Follow along—soon we’ll be WEAVING! Our stay at Goldberry Woods and see the progress in person!
