Off-grid RV & Van camping at Great Sand Dunes = totally doable 🚐⛰️
Here's what nobody tells you: there are NO hookups. Not at Piñon Flats (in-park). Not at Ramble (30 min away). Just you, your rig, and whatever self-sufficiency you brought.
But before you panic, here's why it works:
Ramble's setup for vanlife/RV:
✅ Complimentary dump station on-site (no driving to town)
✅ Outdoor kitchens with propane (save YOUR propane for the fridge)
✅ Hot showers 24/7 (after sand dunes, you NEED this)
✅ Pull-through at Site #9 (no backing in)
✅ 100-200 ft spacing (not parked on top of neighbors)
What you'll need:
🔋 Solar power (or charged batteries) - NO generators at Ramble
💧 Full water tanks (outdoor kitchens have sinks, but plan 5-7 gal/person/day)
⛽ Propane (refill in Alamosa before arrival)
☀️ Ability to manage heat without constant AC
Why Great Sand Dunes works for RVers:
🌅 Park open 24 hours - catch sunrise when sand is cool (150°F by afternoon!)
⭐ International Dark Sky - rooftop stargazing hits different
🛣️ Flat San Luis Valley roads - easier than mountain passes
🏜️ Drive to dunes parking lot, hike, retreat to your rig for AC
