🍂👻🦃🎄 VISITING CHARLESTON OCTOBER–DECEMBER 2026? SAVE THIS!
If you’re coming to Charleston this fall or during the holiday season, you picked an AMAZING time.
And don’t make the mistake of thinking everything happens downtown! Some of the best fall and Christmas events are on James Island, Mount Pleasant, Folly Beach, North Charleston, Summerville, Goose Creek, Kiawah and beyond.
I went through Charleston-area event calendars looking for things a visitor would realistically want to experience — festivals, fairs, pumpkin patches, Halloween events, Christmas lights, historic-home events, markets, parades, concerts and uniquely Lowcountry holiday traditions.
Dates below are confirmed for 2026 unless I specifically say otherwise.
🎃 OCTOBER
🧜♀️ Mermaids & Mateys Festival — October 3
📍 Center Street, Folly Beach
🕙 10 AM–4 PM
This is a fun little Folly Beach day trip if you’re visiting this weekend — pirates, mermaids, live entertainment, vendors and beach-town weirdness in the best way. 😂
🎨 MOJA Arts Festival — through October 1, with the art exhibition through October 25
The main 2026 MOJA festival concludes October 1, celebrating Black, Caribbean and African Diaspora arts and culture through music, performance, food, storytelling and art.
BUT visitors later in October can still see the MOJA Juried Art Exhibition at City Gallery at Waterfront Park through October 25.
🎃 Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch — select weekends through November 1
📍 Mount Pleasant
Corn maze, pumpkins, animals, shows, inflatables and fall activities. This is one of the biggest family fall traditions around Charleston.
And a useful update for returning visitors: Boone Hall no longer operates Fright Nights.
👻 Southern Screams: MACABRE — through November 7
📍 North Charleston
This is the choice for people who actually WANT someone to chase them through a haunted house. 😂
They even have a special lights-out experience November 6–7, while Halloween itself includes a family-friendly lights-on trick-or-treat hour from 5–6 PM before the scares begin.
🌽 West Farm Corn Maze — through November 1
📍 Moncks Corner
Another good option if you’re staying farther north of downtown or want a true fall-farm experience.
🎵 Riverfront Revival — October 9–10
📍 Riverfront Park, North Charleston
Darius Rucker’s Charleston music festival is a major weekend event and absolutely worth knowing about when booking hotels/restaurants around those dates.
🦪 Lowcountry Smoke & Shuck — October 10
📍 Freshfields Village
A food-focused Lowcountry event on the Village Green near Kiawah featuring oysters, barbecue and regional flavors.
🌮 Fall Fiesta: Tacos, Tequila & Tunes — October 16
📍 Freshfields Village
Another fun option if you’re staying near Kiawah/Seabrook or want an excuse to explore that side of the area.
👻 Ghostly Tide Tales — October 16
📍 Isle of Palms
Seasonal spooky storytelling by the beach.
🎈 Mount Pleasant Children’s Day Festival — October 18
A big family-friendly festival with rides, activities and entertainment.
🏛️ Preservation Society Fall Tours — October & November
If you love historic Charleston, THIS is worth looking into. The fall tours can include private homes, gardens, architecture walks and areas normally closed to the public.
👻 Ghost tours in the Historic District
Not one specific event, but October is arguably THE month to do one.
Charleston has graveyard walks, haunted-history tours, jail-related tours and nighttime storytelling all over the Historic District. Even people who normally skip ghost tours tend to enjoy them here because the history and setting are half the experience.
🍂 Charleston Farmers Market — Saturdays through November 21
📍 Marion Square
Food, local artisans, produce, crafts and live entertainment — easy to pair with a downtown sightseeing day.
🎡 LATE OCTOBER + NOVEMBER
🎡 COASTAL CAROLINA FAIR — OCTOBER 29–NOVEMBER 8
📍 Exchange Park, Ladson
One of the biggest things we absolutely needed on this list.
If you’re visiting during these dates, expect rides, fair food, games, animals, agricultural exhibits, entertainment and shows.
This is a HUGE local fall tradition and a great option for families.
📚 CHARLESTON LITERARY FESTIVAL — NOVEMBER
Held largely at historic Dock Street Theatre, with nationally and internationally known writers in conversation.
🥃 BOURBON & BLUEGRASS AT MIDDLETON PLACE — NOVEMBER 7
📍 Middleton Place
This is a much more “Charleston fall evening” kind of experience — bluegrass, bourbon and one of the area’s most historic landscapes.
The 2026 event is scheduled for November 7 from 5–8 PM.
🦪 Shuckin’ on the Harbor Oyster Roast — November 8
📍 Harborside East, Mount Pleasant
🕓 4–7 PM
Oysters + live music + Charleston Harbor views. Definitely visitor-worthy if someone wants a real Lowcountry fall experience.
✨ HOLIDAY FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS — NOVEMBER 13–DECEMBER 31
📍 James Island County Park
🕠 5:30–10 PM nightly
THIS is one of the Charleston-area Christmas must-dos.
The three-mile drive features 750+ illuminated displays and millions of lights, plus holiday train rides, marshmallow roasting, gift shops, a giant sand sculpture, Santa and walk-through areas.
And yes — it operates every night, rain or shine.
🏃 Holiday Festival of Lights Fun Run & Walk — November 11–12
Want to experience the lights before cars take over? Charleston County Parks has special run/walk nights before the festival officially opens.
🍷 FOOD & W**E CLASSIC CHARLESTON — NOVEMBER 13–15
A big destination culinary weekend built around Charleston’s food scene.
One caveat: this is primarily an adult experience, so families should check age restrictions before buying anything.
🐎 STEEPLECHASE OF CHARLESTON — NOVEMBER 15
Horse racing, tailgating, fashion, food and a distinctly Southern fall-event atmosphere.
And yes… there are traditionally corgis involved. 😂
🐠 AQUARIUM AGLOW — STARTING NOVEMBER 20
📍 South Carolina Aquarium
The aquarium after dark with holiday lights, festive displays and seasonal photo opportunities.
This is an especially good option for families staying downtown because you don’t have to drive all the way out to James Island.
🕯️ Nathaniel Russell House Holiday Candlelight Tours — November 20–21
A much quieter, historic Charleston Christmas experience — learning how holidays were celebrated in the early 1800s inside one of Charleston’s best-known historic homes.
🦃 THANKSGIVING WEEK AT KIAWAH — NOVEMBER 21–26
Kiawah Resort runs a surprisingly large schedule of family activities around Thanksgiving, including scavenger hunts, games and special events.
Then on November 28, holiday programming starts with Santa storytime, reindeer games, crafts, hot chocolate and an outdoor showing of Elf.
🎅 Santa at Freshfields Village — November 27–29
Freshfields near Kiawah begins its Christmas season with Santa photos, crafts, live music and a holiday market.
🕯️ Candlelight Tours of Drayton Hall — November 28
Seeing this unrestored 18th-century house after dark is completely different from a normal daytime visit.
🎄 Drayton Hall Holiday Sip & Shop + Wreath Workshop — November 29
Both are officially on the 2026 calendar.
🎄 DECEMBER — CHARLESTON GOES FULL CHRISTMAS
🎄 OLD TIME CHRISTMAS TREE CELEBRATION — DECEMBER 1
📍 Hutchinson Square, Summerville
🕠 5:30–8:30 PM
Tree lighting around 6 PM
Food trucks, vendors, Santa, letters to Santa, decorated storefront windows and the tree-lighting countdown.
This is one of the BEST additions I found on the second pass because visitors staying in Summerville or North Charleston could easily miss it.
🩰 THE NUTCRACKER — DECEMBER 2
📍 Charleston Music Hall
South Carolina Ballet brings its Nutcracker production to Charleston.
🎄 Christmas with Chris Tomlin — December 3
📍 North Charleston Performing Arts Center
🎶 Holy City Messiah — December 3
📍 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
✨ LIGHT THE LAKE — DECEMBER 4
📍 Colonial Lake
Another good downtown Christmas event to pair with dinner and a walk through the historic district.
🕯️ AIKEN-RHETT HOUSE HOLIDAY CANDLELIGHT TOURS — DECEMBER 4–5
See another side of Charleston’s holiday history by candlelight.
🎁 CHRISTMAS MADE IN THE SOUTH — DECEMBER 4–6
📍 Exchange Park
Huge arts-and-crafts show with makers and gift shopping.
🛍️ CHARLESTON HOLIDAY MARKET — DECEMBER 5, 6, 12, 13 & 19
📍 Marion Square
Turn your regular downtown sightseeing day into a Christmas shopping day.
🎄 CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE — DECEMBER 5–19
📍 Hutchinson Square, Summerville
Downtown Summerville fills the square with decorated Christmas trees and holiday displays.
🦪 DRAYTON HALL ANNUAL OYSTER ROAST — DECEMBER 6
Oysters at a historic Charleston property in December is about as Lowcountry as it gets. 😂
The 2026 roast is officially scheduled for December 6.
🎅 THE CHARLESTON PLACE CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE
📍 Market & Meeting Streets
And YES — this is the hotel with the snow.
Even if you aren’t staying there, go inside.
The Charleston Place historically transforms with elaborate Christmas trees, decorations, model trains, seasonal experiences and its famous artificial snowfall outside around Market Street Circle.
This is one I would tell almost every December visitor to stop and see.
🎁 SOUTHERN LIVING ILLUMINATION CHARLESTON — DECEMBER 4–5
Holiday food, entertaining, demonstrations and shopping. Check age restrictions for individual components.
🎄 Dickens Dinner — December 9
📍 Circa 1886
A dinner paired with a retelling of A Christmas Carol. This is more of a splurge/date-night experience, but VERY visitor-worthy.
🥜 A Charlie Brown Christmas: Live on Stage — December 10
📍 Charleston Gaillard Center
Really cute option for families.
🎶 CHARLESTON CHRISTMAS SPECIAL — DECEMBER 11–22
📍 Charleston Music Hall
Charleston’s long-running local Christmas stage show returns for its 31st season.
And FYI — December 16 is Kids Free Night.
🎅 DECEMBER 12 IS INSANE 😂
There are multiple events all over the Lowcountry on the same day:
🎅 Folly Beach Christmas Parade — noon
Center Street, followed by Santa at Folly River Park.
🎄 Mount Pleasant Holiday Market & Craft Show
Holiday shopping and local artisans.
🎅 Christmas in the Creek Parade
📍 Goose Creek
Confirmed for December 12.
🏃 Reindeer Run
📍 Downtown Charleston
Holiday-themed downtown 5K.
🎁 Charleston Santa at the Best Friend Train Museum
And over on Kiawah, Marathon Weekend + Holiday Market is happening December 10–12. The holiday market operates alongside the Kiawah Island Marathon expo.
✨ MOUNT PLEASANT CHRISTMAS LIGHT PARADE — DECEMBER 13
📍 Coleman Boulevard
One of the area's best Christmas parades because the floats themselves are illuminated.
If you're visiting that weekend, I would definitely consider this one.
🎶 SPIRITUALS CONCERT UNDER THE OAKS — DECEMBER 13
📍 Drayton Hall
Ann Caldwell & The Magnolia Singers perform traditional spirituals beneath the live oaks.
This sounds BEAUTIFUL and it often sells out.
🎄 HOLIDAY POPS — DECEMBER 17–19
📍 Charleston Gaillard Center
The Charleston Symphony + chorus + Broadway/film performer Cheyenne Jackson for 2026.
🩰 CHARLESTON’S NUTCRACKER — DECEMBER 18–20
📍 Sottile Theatre
Another Nutcracker option right downtown.
🏠 CHRISTMAS IN CHARLESTON CANDLELIGHT TOUR OF PRIVATE HOMES — DECEMBER 18–19
This one is VERY appealing for visitors who are fascinated by Charleston houses because it offers access to private historic homes decorated for the season.
🎁 HOLY CITY HOLIDAY MARKET — DECEMBER 19–20
📍 Park Circle/North Charleston
One of the larger holiday maker markets in the area, with 200+ vendors, food and entertainment.
🎁 BUY LOCAL BLOCK PARTY — DECEMBER 19
Another local-shopping event happening the same weekend.
🎤 LESLIE ODOM JR. CHRISTMAS TOUR — DECEMBER 20
📍 Charleston Gaillard Center
YES — Aaron Burr himself. 😂
This could be a GREAT December date night for visitors.
🕯️ BAYBERRY CANDLE DIPPING — DECEMBER 26–30
📍 Middleton Place
A particularly unique “between Christmas and New Year’s” activity.
Visitors can make traditional bayberry candles at Middleton Place.
🏝️ AND DON'T OVERLOOK KIAWAH DURING CHRISTMAS
This surprised me during the deep dive.
Kiawah Island Golf Resort actually has a huge Christmas program beginning Thanksgiving weekend — Santa’s arrival, tree lighting, family games, crafts, Christmas movies, scavenger hunts, Christmas Glow Golf and seasonal dining.
Some activities are resort-guest restricted, but others are open more broadly, so check individual listings before making the drive.
🎆 STAYING THROUGH NEW YEAR'S?
Folly Beach New Year's Eve Fireworks — December 31
📍 Folly Beach
Folly's official visitor site confirms a family-friendly beach fireworks show for New Year's Eve.
🎄 EVENTS I AM PURPOSELY NOT GIVING A 2026 DATE YET
There are a few annual favorites that absolutely belong on a visitor’s radar, but I’d rather wait for the organizer’s actual 2026 schedule than copy last year’s date:
Charleston Holiday Parade & Marion Square Tree Lighting
Charleston Holiday Parade of Boats
Chanukah in the Square
The Charleston Place nightly snowfall schedule
The Charleston Place Santa/model-train special event schedule
Some third-party sites already have dates floating around for these, but the official organizer pages either haven't caught up or are still showing past-year information. I would add them to the post later as soon as those dates are locked.
❤️ IF I WERE VISITING CHARLESTON DURING THESE MONTHS…
If it were October, I’d do the Pumpkin Patch or Fair + downtown Charleston + a ghost tour.
If it were November, I’d look at the Fair, Food & W**e weekend, an oyster roast and then Holiday Festival of Lights once it opens.
And if it were December, I would absolutely do:
The Charleston Place snow/decorations → walk King/Market/Broad → one Christmas market → Holiday Festival of Lights → one historic-house/candlelight experience.
That gives you a really good mix of “Christmas in Charleston” + actual Lowcountry traditions, rather than just generic holiday stuff you could see anywhere.
LOCALS — what else would you tell someone visiting Charleston in October, November or December that they absolutely shouldn't miss?!
Visitors — save this post because I will keep updating it as more 2026 holiday schedules are released! ❤️🎄
