Back to school, little baby hosts! Your treehouse hosts-in-training have wrapped up their Summer of Choices.

Some days, they chose to be on screens until their visions blurred and their brains were fully scrambled. Some days they asked for jobs and helped with the treehouse and landscaping work. Some days they disappeared into the woods on foot and other days they took off on bikes and roamed the neighborhood looking for other summer wild things.

The dude host learned to surf. The redhead host learned to make origami stars. The teenager mastered the art of making balloon dogs. All small accomplishments they’ll carry for life.

All had days of boredom followed by days of wanting to slow down. And now, relaxed, we can resume the meaningful work of filling our minds with ideas and our hearts with knowing. 💙🤍

Take any trail from the Rogers Woods valley to the top of the hill. There you’ll find a the Trailside Treehouse. Climb to the top of the ladder, open the screen door and step onto the balcony.

Look north towards the river to the wall of leaves and hardwood branches. Here’s that view.

As these trees release their leaves over the coming season, you’ll see layers of dense forest canopy slowly peel away to reveal a vast riverside valley leading to the James River, cross-crossed with animal and people pathways. Enjoy the expansive view for just one season before the canopy bursts back to verdant abundance, cushioning you in its dense fortress and infusing rich oxygen into the air all around.

I love this place.

Time to rock ‘n roll. Another 7 tons of beautiful rip rap that I’m using to design and define our outdoor play space and trails.

Did you know that the granite quarries along the James River adjacent to the treehouse property have supplied stone not only for Richmond’s infrastructure (buildings, kerbs, etc), but Richmond’s quarries have also supplied the beautiful stone that built the Philadelphia city hall. This summer I’ve been hauling in rip rap stone from the nearby Luck Stone quarry. It has a very different look than the granite found in the dense bands near the treehouse.

If you love rocks, the falls of the James is an incredible place to see a lot of different varieties in a small area.

Christian was just a young thing when he convinced Uncle Josh to build a treehouse for him. Now he’s building retaining walls to help tame with wilderness for our guests. We all get one life to lean in to the things we naturally love. Embrace it like this guy. 🩷❤️
