In an alpine farmhouse, the best room in the house was always the Stube, the low-ceilinged parlor where the stove lived and everyone gathered at the end of the day. The ceiling was kept low on purpose. It held the warmth in and it drew people a little closer together.

Sonnenalp carries that same instinct. Our ceilings sit lower than you'll find in most hotels, and our rooms are sized for conversation. No two guest rooms are alike. The armchairs, the chests, the lamps and the paintings are European pieces, chosen one at a time.

It's a kind of luxury you feel more than you see, usually around 9 p.m., with a book in your lap and the fire going.

When the air outside has a real chill, the kind that settles into the valley in mid-October and doesn't leave, there is something deeply restorative about warm water, steam, and the particular quiet of a spa that isn't crowded.

Here is something we think about often: when the Fässler family first envisioned bringing their European hotel tradition to the United States, Vail was barely a decade old. The mountain had just opened, the village was still finding itself and a family from Germany looked at this steep, snow-covered valley and saw exactly what they were looking for.

That was more than forty years ago. The fifth generation of the Fässler family is here now. The same ethos. The same commitment to welcoming guests as if they were already family. The same belief that a hotel can be a place people return to not because it's convenient, but because it feels like something.

Some guests plan their October stays around two things: the spa and Ludwig's Breakfast.

We understand completely.

The greenhouse dining room has a quality in October that's worth the trip on its own. The sky through the glass ceiling is a deeper blue. Breakfast arrives at an unhurried pace with house-baked pastries, eggs, seasonal fruit, proper coffee. And the room, warm and European, is at its most welcoming when the village outside is quiet.

The Sonnenalp Club is doing its best to stay open through the end of October and if you've ever played this course in late fall, you understand why we're rooting for it.

The fairways are quieter. The aspens are bare now, silver and spare against the sky. The Gore Range is closer somehow in this light: a little more present, a little more dramatic. A round in late October at the Club is one of those experiences that's hard to describe and impossible to forget.

The days are shorter. The air at altitude has a different quality now: sharper, cleaner, the particular cold that only means one thing in Vail. The high peaks have their first snow. The mountain is quiet, but not for much longer.

Vail Mountain opens November 13th.

King's Club is here for the fall season and in October, it's exactly the right place to be.

Open Fridays and Saturdays, 5–10pm. Live music every Saturday, 7–10pm.

In a quieter month, when the village has settled and the evenings have that particular October chill, there's something especially good about a room this warm, a bar program this considered, and live music that fills the space without overwhelming it.

When the MICHELIN Guide announced its 2026 Key selection this fall, Sonnenalp was honored to be among the hotels recognized. The Key looks at the whole of a stay, not any single part of it: the architecture, the service, the feeling that a place could only exist exactly where it is. That's why it means so much to us.
