June in Vail holds a special place in the Mejia family’s hearts. A few summers ago, they chose Sonnenalp for their honeymoon and found lasting memories within the warmth of its walls. While the mountains set the stage for many of their adventures, the newlyweds especially fell in love with Sonnenalp’s culinary delights, especially Swiss Chalet’s fondue. 🫕

“Each staff member we interacted with made us feel like being at home and with family,” Rigo shared. To us, that’s exactly what Gemütlichkeit hospitality is all about.

Forty years ago, in 1986, Chef Mario brought the flavors of his hometown in northern Mexico to Sonnenalp's kitchens for the first time. Four decades later, there’s still no mistaking Mario’s masterful touch in Ludwig’s buffet breakfast, especially his signature chilaquiles: crispy corn tortillas drenched in a rich salsa blend made fresh every sunrise.

As our longest-standing employee, Chef Mario truly represents the heart, loyalty and warmth that define Gemütlichkeit hospitality. Congratulations on 40 incredible years, Mario!

Every month, we go through sixteen hundred pounds of cheese at Swiss Chalet. 🧀 Each ounce is imported from Switzerland and pulled into pots of fondue and raclette, prepared according to the original Swiss recipes the Faessler family grew up on. It’s Swiss Chalet’s way of taking you on a journey to Europe, right here in Vail.

When Johannes and Rosana Faessler (pictured here) took over the Sonnenalp in 1986, Vail lacked two essentials: good bread and a quality cup of coffee. Today, our in-house bakery turns out delicious Bavarian pretzels and pastries every morning, and Lavazza espresso runs through every restaurant on the property.
