Lots of work happening around the farm today. Paul is getting prepared to build a shed around the sawmill. Keith and Kevin are mowing and blowing leaves from the driveways. And I just took a few pieces of glass art out of my kiln…some will be turned into nightlights and some are ornaments for hanging.

Another beautiful fall day here at the farm! 🍂🍁

Guests have checked out, and we’re busy getting everything cleaned and ready for our next arrivals this afternoon! We always love reading the sweet notes our guests leave behind. It means so much to know they enjoyed their stay!

If you are in the Boone area over the weekend be sure to stop by Mystery Hill and enjoy some great storytelling hosted by the Watauga County Heritage Museum See this shared post for more information

Meet our lead Haunted Watauga storyteller, Joe Lowman!

Joe grew up in Boone, where he learned to tell stories from family friend Richard Chase, widely remembered for documenting and publishing Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales from the Old Beech Mountain Community and beyond. As a father, Joe rediscovered storytelling to entertain his children and grew active in telling stories in schools. He retired from UNC as a Professor of Clinical Psychology and has since had more time for storytelling. Joe won the inaugural Orville Hicks Mountain talkers Contest in 2025 and returned to the competition in 2026 as a judge.

We can’t wait to hear some of his spooky mountain tales on Friday! See you 6 pm at Mystery Hill.

Thank you Mary Moretz for all your hard work and dedication to the Watauga County Heritage Museum

✨Member Spotlight Monday: Mary Moretz! ✨

Today is our very first Member Spotlight Monday, and who better to kick off with than one of the people behind the founding of the Watauga County Heritage Museum? Mary Moretz is a charter member, a board member, and served as our organization’s first secretary, but her influence goes far beyond these roles.

Mary has lived in Watauga County all her life, taught social studies at Watauga High School for 37 years, and raised two sons, Bradley and Bryan, here. She is a proud descendant of Benjamin Howard, who pastured his cattle here before the Revolution, built a cabin for his herders and hunters, and whose chief herder hosted Daniel Boone in his cabin. She is also descended from early settlers Jeremiah Greene and John Moretz, founder of Moretz Mills.

Mary has a passion for historic preservation and led the Daniel Boone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in several preservation projects. She felt that the biggest preservation project was still missing: “Having a Watauga County Heritage Museum that would tell the stories of our people before they were lost.” Mary says, “It’s amazing what one can accomplish if they are willing to work, learn, and have faith in the talents of others.”

Thanks for all you do for the Watauga County Heritage Museum, Mary!
