Robin Flinchum, author of The Redemption of Julia Bulette; Murder, Myth and the Hunt for a Serial Killer in Early Virginia City, will talk about one of Virginia City’s most famous crimes, touching on early forensic policing, life in the red light district and the mythology surrounding the Comstock’s favorite courtesan.

Bio:

Robin Flinchum is an award-winning journalist and historian whose work explores crime, myth, and memory in the early American West. Trained in journalism, she brings investigative rigor and narrative precision to nineteenth-century sources. She is the author of Red Light Women of Death Valley, the first book to recover the lives of women long erased from the region’s mining-camp history. Her research has reshaped the historical record and inspired permanent museum exhibits.

Thursday, September 17th lecture will be a Chautauqua performance by Kim Harris as “Lizzie Borden – guilty or innocent?”

Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m.

Description:

Perhaps one of the most notorious murders of the 19th Century was that of Andrew and Abby Borden. Andrew’s daughter Lizzie was tried and acquitted in a court of law for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in 1892, in Fall River, Massachusetts. The court of public opinion sentenced her to a life of public scrutiny and branded her a social pariah.

Lizzie A. Borden will share the story of her life in Fall River, her memories of the trial and how she learned to live in a world which had drastically changed for her, once she was acquitted of the murders

Bio:

Kim Harris is currently a resident of Genoa, NV and a longtime local to the surrounding Sierra communities. She was born and raised at Donner Lake, CA.

Performing as a character actress and Chautauquan since 2010 via her business “Western History ALIVE!”, Kim regularly portrays several local and national historic figures which include stagecoach driver Charley Parkhurst, Genoa and Nevada suffragist Lillian Virgin Finnegan, frontierswoman Calamity Jane and Libbie Custer, the wife of General George Armstrong Custer.

Kim has also served on the advisory boards of the Lake Tahoe Historical Society and the Douglas County Historical Society. Presently she is the events manager of Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden, NV and is the president of the Genoa, NV based Friends of Snowshoe Thompson group.

Lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $10 per person.

Welcome to the 2026 Ghost Tour series at the Gold Hill Hotel! Reservation still available Thursday 4/23 & 4/30!

The Gold Hill Hotel (as seen on Ghost Adventures and proclaimed the 8th most haunted location in Nevada) is now offering Historical Ghost Tours. These tours benefit various local charities. Hosted by the Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters (NNGH), your evening will start with a gourmet dinner in the Crown Point restaurant (one of the best restaurants on the Comstock).

After dinner, NNGH will guide you back in time with tales of the history and the hauntings of the hotel and the surrounding area, known as Slippery Gulch. Using ghost hunting tools and techniques, you can try to make contact with the spirits still in residence at the hotel. Please note that you will be touring some of the actual haunted rooms in the hotel as well!

Before the tour or during the intermission, quench your thirst and calm your nerves with a drink in the 150 year old bar, as frequented by Mark Twain back in the day! This is sure to be an evening to remember. Come join us! Click the link below to reserve your spot:
