SPRING at NNR!!
Guests in our Little Barn were treated to this sight recently in the parking area above the cabin, and later to the sight of this barred owl in the tree off the deck, perhaps hoping to attract a mate. We hear their "Who-cooks-for-youuuu" call all the time, but sightings are much less common.
Birding guests were also able to identify red start, eastern phoebe, towhee, grey catbird, oriole, trumpeter swans, and of course the sandhill cranes, eagles and other usual suspects.

Tom decided to make and install a few pieces of playground/exercise equipment, just to spice up a morning walk, or stimulate a little competition for our guests. Our grandson/neighbor was eager to show y'all how it's done! Betcha can't beat him on the balance beam.

A few evenings ago, the conditions were perfect to burn a few small areas of planted prairie. This is beneficial to the native plants, and can help knock back the invasive non-native plants. Plus it's fun, if it's carefully planned and executed under the right conditions.

Our neighbor, who lives across the road and up the hill, overlooks the property at Nature Nooks retreat. She captured a glorious moment this morning, sun coming up, fog (not snow!) blanketing the valley, and the remaining fall colors of the oaks hanging on to their leaves.

We have "seas" of common milkweed, literally acres, thriving in various parts of our property. It's a treat for the senses, with the distinct heavy fragrance and the mauve-colored flowers. But I'm still not seeing the eggs, nor very many adult monarchs. Keeping my eyes open, and hopes up!
