Yellowjackets (a type of stinging wasp) are abundant in Sequoia and Kings Canyon campgrounds, picnic areas, and outdoor restaurant areas in late summer and fall, and they are attracted to human food and drinks.

If you plan to camp or picnic, please take precautions such as bringing a screened enclosure for eating, preparing food as much as possible in advance (never cook in a tent or screen enclosure), watching for nests in ground holes or logs, and bringing a sting treatment kit. Putting food away as soon as you are done eating and cleaning up tables where food has spilled helps keep wasps away. Those with allergies to stings should take extra precautions.

If you are stung: Remove the stinger if visible, apply ice or cold water, and seek immediate medical attention if you have difficulty breathing.
