Today’s Hawaiian word of the day is ʻohana.
ʻOhana means family, relative, kin group; related

Many of you are already familiar with this word as it was made popular in a movie. But it is often misspelled without the ʻokina.

Hawaiians believe the word ʻohana derives from the word ʻohā, which are the baby kalo (also referred to as the offspring) that grow from the corm of the plant. These ʻohā along with the Malia kalo form an ʻohana. (See the diagram on slide 2)
