Some books offer recipes. Others tell a story. Main, Middle & Gay by Patrick O’Connell does something more meaningful—it offers a glimpse into the journey of one of America’s most celebrated chefs and a true visionary in hospitality.

Having enjoyed several unforgettable meals at The Inn at Little Washington over the years, along with relaxed lunches on the patio at Patty O’s, I’ve always admired Chef Patrick’s extraordinary cuisine. But what has stayed with me even more is something harder to define: the genuine warmth, impeccable service, and unwavering attention to each guest. It’s the kind of hospitality that lingers long after the final course.

Learning more about his path makes those experiences even more meaningful. His story is one of perseverance, creativity, authenticity, and a relentless commitment to excellence—not only in what arrives on the plate but also in how every guest is welcomed and cared for.

For anyone who appreciates exceptional travel, memorable dining, or the art of hospitality, this is more than a memoir. It’s an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy behind a place that has become a destination in its own right.

If you haven’t experienced The Inn at Little Washington, it’s well worth adding to your travel list. If you have, this book offers a deeper appreciation of the remarkable individual whose vision transformed a small Virginia town into one of the world’s most celebrated culinary destinations…

Soon, apples will perfume the kitchen, mulled cider will warm the hands, and our beloved Apple-Rutabaga soup—“Liquid Autumn”—will make its seasonal return. All around us, the Blue Ridge will be ablaze with color, making even a simple walk through our gardens feel unexpectedly special.

Our Signature Experiences offer overnight guests an even more intimate way to experience the season. Visit our farm with Andy for a taste of the season’s harvest, tour our gardens with Dave as they take on their vibrant color, or enjoy an afternoon spent with our florist, Sarah, creating a floral arrangement that captures the spirit of autumn and lets you bring a little piece of Little Washington home with you.

This has long been the most coveted time of year at The Inn, and overnight reservations are already becoming scarce. We hope autumn brings you our way, so we might experience a little of its magic together.

Afternoons around our pool have become a little more refreshing.

Cocktails and other spirited offerings are now being served—for leisurely hours by the water.

Kept at 85 degrees, our pool is one indulgence that needn’t end with summer.

The Rappahannock News is the first to publish a review of The Inn at Little Washington Patrick O’Connell’s long-awaited memoir. This review was not shared with the book’s author prior to publication.

I have known Patrick O’Connell for nearly 40 years, delighted in his food, served on the Washington Town Council together and shared birthday celebrations. I know him. And now, after reading his engaging memoir, “Main, Middle & Gay: A Chef Finds His Place in the World Against All Odds,” I think I understand him.

Our farm’s tomatoes take center stage in our Parmesan Agnolotti. Perfumed with lemon verbena and basil, the dish is a centerpiece of our Good Earth Menu and perfectly captures one of summer’s most anticipated flavors.

But its story begins months before it reaches the table.

Farmer Andy raises our tomatoes from seedlings, tending them with an almost parental devotion: nourishing the soil organically, and training and pruning the vines by hand. He watches carefully as blossoms give way to fruit, and allows them to ripen on the vine as nature intended.

It is a delicious labor of love, bringing the bounty of our farm to the table and reminding us that the best things are worth waiting for.
