The secret to the Weeki Wachee mermaids was never magic. It was a simple air hose and a whole lot of practice. 🧜‍♀️

In 1947, Newton Perry, who had trained Navy frogmen, opened an underwater theater built right into the side of the spring. Performers learned to breathe from free flowing air hoses hidden in the scenery, letting them eat, drink, and smile underwater while the audience watched through glass windows below the surface.

By the time ABC bought the attraction in 1959, Weeki Wachee was one of the most famous roadside stops in America. Today it is a Florida state park, and the mermaids are still performing in that same cold, clear spring water. 💙

Today, Weeki Wachee Springs celebrates its 79th anniversary! 🎂💙

What began with founder Newton Perry and a handful of talented underwater performers has grown into one of Florida’s most beloved attractions, home to the world-famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids.

For 79 years, generations of families have made unforgettable memories at Weeki Wachee Springs. From the breathtaking underwater mermaid shows to the natural beauty of our crystal-clear spring, the magic continues today at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

Deep in the woods along a spring fed river, generations of Floridians have watched real live mermaids glide through crystal water. 🧜‍♀️ Weeki Wachee Springs opened its underwater theater in 1947, and for nearly eighty years its performers have breathed through hidden air hoses while smiling, twirling, and even sipping soda beneath the surface.

The idea came from a former Navy man named Newton Perry, who trained young women to perform aquatic ballet in the spring while breathing from air tubes rather than tanks, an illusion that let them appear to live underwater. Audiences sat in a theater built right into the limestone below the waterline, watching the mermaids perform against a backdrop of swaying eelgrass and passing fish, all lit by shafts of Florida sunshine. At its peak the show drew huge crowds and even Hollywood stars off the old highways.

Amazingly, the mermaids are still performing today, now within a Florida state park, keeping one of the last great roadside attractions of old Florida alive. ✨ There is something wonderfully strange and enchanting about a place where the deep, clear spring itself becomes the stage.
