Our beloved Grand Canyon is proving once again that while it is worthy of being one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, it is also a harsh and unforgiving environment. After the fire on the North Rim last year to now this devastating flooding at the bottom of the canyon from torrential rains over the burn scar, Grand Canyon National Park has endured so many challenges. We are so grateful to all those who live and work both at the bottom and the top of this national treasure, both the national park service and Xanterra, the concessionaire. Their dedication, passion and enduring spirit will get them through this, And our prayers go out to those who survived and the families of those who perished in the midst of your once-in-a-lifetime trips to the bottom of the Grand Canyon as the flood waters hit.
Meanwhile, don't let this affect your plans to see this most amazing and awe-inspiring place. The Grand Canyon Railway is still taking visitors to the South Rim from Williams every day, and the restaurants and services are still operating. Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab trail are open for day use - you just can't go to the bottom. Even in the midst of these challenges, the Grand Canyon lives on.
