We had quite a few eastbound travelers waiting for Amtrak to arrive on the south side of La Posada this morning. The boarding area has been under construction for the last few months, with new lights and ramps being built to allow for easier access to the train. A temporary boarding area has been put in place so Amtrak service will not be interrupted.

The gardens have really come to life over the last couple of weeks, and the pools and fountains are attracting lots of birds.

Some planting projects are a little more difficult than others. We are working on the gardens that will surround the Affeldt Mion Museum on the east side of the hotel. This area was paved and repaved by the Santa Fe Railroad for some 50 years, and digging a simple hole involves cutting through layers of asphalt. We are planting some test lavender to see what the growing conditions are like. We are hoping that the lavender follows the example of the sage brush growing nearby, which found a way to reach the clay soil beneath the asphalt and survive. Time will tell. If this lavender does not take, then will will dig a bigger hole. If that does not work then we will get a backhoe. One way or another we will bring a garden to this area. Like the sage brush, we are pretty stubborn about our work.

It seems like RV travel through Winslow has continually increased over the last few years. We regularly see motorhomes parked along the Route 66 side of the hotel. Yesterday we had a visit from Fantasy RV Tours and Caravans, that brought us around 30 RVs that stopped to have lunch in the Turquoise Room. Our thanks to the tour organizers for including La Posada on their Mother Road Tour.

A little over 15 years ago these two arches in La Posada’s Tower Wing were sealed-in to create a private apartment for owners Allan Affeldt and Tina Mion. The crew has been converting that apartment into three new guest rooms over the last few months, and today we had the pleasure of opening these arches again and recreating the view back along the Tower Staircase into the ballroom. I suspect it was more fun taking the walls down than putting them up.

If you follow our newsletter, you may remember we mentioned a new online shopping experience in the works. We are happy to announce the online store is live! We are still working on populating the store, but you will find a much wider selection than our former online shop, on a more robust platform. Our manager Bridget has added a vast array of our beautiful Native jewelry, along with Mimbreño dishware, a large selection of Zapotec rugs, and more. Happy shopping!
